Mets to get first look at remodeled Citi Field

PORT ST. LUCIE, Fla. -- When the Mets arrive early this morning at newly renovated Citi Field, the first thing they might want to do is see exactly what it looks like. After hearing so much about the changes, the players will have only a few hours to adjust to the shorter, closer and now blue walls before the season opener against the Braves.

The ballpark's redesign is going to affect the Mets in plenty of obvious ways, but also in some you might not expect.

"For me, like with throws from the shortstop and stuff, there used to be a huge wall there and it used to be black," Ike Davis said. "Now it's going to be not there and I'm not sure how I'm going to see the ball from the fielders when they throw it."

Further complicating matters is that the Mets played a game in Tampa Wednesday, the back end of a home-and-home with the Yankees. That killed any chance of a workout day to help get comfortable at Citi Field.

"There isn't a big grace period," Jason Bay said, "so we'll be learning on the fly. But it's the only option we have. It's not that we're choosing to do it this way. Hopefully, it will be enough."

What a well run organization.

Hard to watch doesn't even begin to cover it.

Today is opening day at Citifield so good luck Metsies! Hope some of the young guys show some promise this season.
I won't be there but I will be there in spirit.

The Mets are all wearing Gary Carter's #8 during batting practice today. Nice gesture.

Phils win 1-0!
Halladay was BRILLIANT allowing a scant 2 hits in 8 innings-and they were the first 2 hits of the game. Paplebon closed it out 1-2-3.
The offense? Ugh-but it will be like this for a while. Ruiz had 3 hits and an RBI.
I will now let Mets fans rejoice in their victory by the same score (and my NL team got a save from Francisco).

Great job by the Mets in winning opening day for GARY CARTER with a shutout! Fantastic work by Santana and the new bullpen. I don't have much hope for the season but today was a great day, and the Mets added to the best opening day record in MLB history - and that includes when they lost 8 of their first 9 opening day games. Incredible!

Man when he's healthy Santana is a world class pitcher. Out of baseball for two years he comes in today and pitches like he never left.
Too bad the Mets have no offense but it was a great day for Mets to see him on the mound once again.

Nice to see the Nats get their first curly W of the year. It would be a lot easier for us to get them if we could do a better job driving runners home, but a win's a win!

Seems like the hitters will need time to catch up (or warmer weather).

We're going to get to see more of the future.......Kirk Nieuwenhuis is supposed to be one of the big prospects that's supposed to be part of the Mets "bright" future.

Hopefully he pans out....or at least makes Andres Torres lose his starting job when he comes back.

Quote:

Official: Torres to DL, Kirk promoted

The Mets have placed center fielder Andres Torres on the 15-day disabled list with a strained left calf, the team announced Friday.

In a corresponding roster move, the Mets have promoted Kirk Nieuwenhuis, who will be available on Saturday and should make his MLB debut this weekend, from Triple-A Buffalo, confirming a report from Adam Rubin of ESPNNewYork.com.

Torres suffered his second strained left calf injury in 16 days while pursuing a fly ball off the bat of Braves shortstop Tyler Pastornicky in the seventh inning of Thursday's 1-0 victory.

He will report to the team's spring-training facility in Port St. Lucie, Fla. on Friday to begin rehab.

Torres originally suffered the injury in a March 20 spring training game.

Shortstop Ruben Tejada will step into the leadoff spot in the lineup in Torres' absence, manager Terry Collins said. Tejada hit .222 in seven games in the No. 1 spot last season.

Nieuwenhuis, 24, hit .298 with six home runs and 14 RBIs last season at Buffalo before requiring surgery for a torn labrum in his non-throwing shoulder. He was slowed in spring training by an oblique strain, but returned to action on the minor league side March 29.

It is likely Nieuwenhuis will split time in center with Scott Hairston, depending on matchups.

The team’s third-round pick in the 2008 First-Year Player draft, Nieuwenhuis went 0-for-2 with two walks and a stolen base for the Bison on Thursday night.

For some reason it hasn't been mentioned yet but the Yankees ended up losing the opener in Tampa because of a blown save by the great Mo in the bottom of the 9th 7-6.

I watched most of the game and it was entertaining. These are two teams that can hit and have generally good pitching.

It just doesn't feel like an opener in that awful stadium down there.

Yeah, I saw an opener in Tampa one year and it is kind of weird atmosphere.

Got to say I have no desire to ever see a game in that Stadium. Yet I would consider buying a place somewhere outside of Tampa.

Same.
I don't even like watching games televised from there. Oakland is the same, but the Marlins have come off that list.

Many of my Yankee fans are in mid season form and are screaming for Girardi to be relieved of his duties. :D
Ahhh baseball, one game and it's all doom and gloom. Thank goodness the Mets won a game and got a win under their belt or there would be suicides in Flushing.

This is going to be a long long season. :(

Sure. Get rid of Girardi after one game.

Duda is the man today. Hits 2 HRs out at Citifield today as does Wright. Nice tidy 4-2 win for RA Dickey.
