A night at the Avalon that began with Dredg playing their 2005 album Catch Without Arms in its entirety turned into a surreal Dredg Teen Dance Party as the band invited 40 or so people from the audience on stage for the encores... got a solid smack to the jaw from a "dancer" on the main floor during the main set, but emerged otherwise unscathed.

Saw Van Halen last night at Boardwalk Hall in Atlantic City and it was a great performance. EVH was on fire from the opening notes and his solo spotlight was simply awesome. I don't care if some 12 year old thinks he can play "Eruption" in his bedroom on You Tube. To see the man himself play it as well as "Cathedral" and a shitload of other soloing was an absolute pleasure.
Alex's drum solo incorporated some Latin/Swing styles and was pretty neat and his bass pedal work all night was incredible (and yes, he had the quad bass setup!).
Wolfie was highly impressive with a very heavy, large sound that took some getting used to, but he was very good-a real musician I must say.
The highlight for me was the backing vocals which were incredible most of the night (whether the off-stage keyboardist helped as well I do not know).
As for DLR? Well, let's just say he wasn't very good but didn't embarrass himself. On the opening tune "Unchained" he was barely even vocalising and was more or less talking with those occassional horrible yelps he now does. On some songs Dave sounded passable, but by and large he wasn't good. Still, you had to love his being there even with the weird old-man skip steps and cap. His ridiculous speech and film about his sheepdogs was so bizarre and stupid it defies logic.
The crowd was very exuberant and it was fun. The stage was just the guys and their amps and the light show was good, so that was fine. The video screen was enormous though-I'll say that much. Sound mix in Boardwalk hall was really nice. The openness of the venue really helped.
I have to say-it was very brief, but disgusting-at one point on the video screen, a picture of the new album's cover popped up with an ad that you could buy it at Best Buy! Are you fucking kidding me? We were stunned. It was 5 sickening seconds for sure.
Anyway, hearing tracks like "The Full Bug", "Outta Love Again" (yeah!), "Somebody Get Me A Doctor" and "Hear About It Later" was awesome along with the classics like "Dance The Night Away", "Hot For Teacher" (which really cooked), "Ain't Talkin' 'Bout Love", "(Oh) Pretty Woman" and "Ice Cream Man". The new stuff was OK. I liked that there was no encore-they just stayed onstage and played "Jump".
We only saw 4 songs from Kool & The Gang and while they were very tight, we weren't really into it.

set list:
Unchained
Runnin' With the Devil
She's the Woman
The Full Bug
Tattoo
Everybody Wants Some!!
Somebody Get Me a Doctor
China Town
Hear About It Later
(Oh) Pretty Woman
Drum Solo
You Really Got Me
The Trouble with Never
Dance the Night Away
I'll Wait
Hot for Teacher
Women In Love
Outta Love Again
Beautiful Girls
Ice Cream Man
Panama
Guitar Solo (inc. Eruption and Cathedral)
Ain't Talkin' 'Bout Love
Jump

Good move DanO. They get to see Brian Wilson in person and agree, the best we can ever expect to see the Beach Boys. Great memories will be made and your children will have bragging rights for decades.

At least they've got a Wilson in the band. It has to have been at least two decades since Brian has toured with the boys. I'm surprised, because I thought I read somewhere that Brian changed his mind about doing the tour.

The Beach Boys are passing by Jones Beach in June and I might see them if the night is nice. My only problem is when I saw them on then Grammys it looked like a band you'd see for free in a park. They really depended on the backup band and singers.

And IP, glad you enjoyed VH? Sounds similar to the show we saw. Much better show than the one we saw in 2007 at the Garden. It is fun to see Eddie having fun and using his god given talents.

Yeah-we had a fun time and Boardwalk Hall is a great place for a concert. Really, if DLR sounded even halfway decent it would've been perfect. But, perfection is hard to come by, so we really liked it. I still miss Mikey, but Wolfie has proven his worth to me.
EVH was enjoying himself tremendously and he gave Wolfie a fatherly kiss at the end which was pretty cool.
It wasn't the best concert I've ever seen, but it was worth it.

I saw the Experience Hendrix show this weekend in Austin. The show was great. Nothing beats a concert of nothing but Jimi Hendrix songs.

Highlights of the show for me were:

Eric Johnson playing Little Miss Lover with Dweezil Zappa, He also did a great version of May This Be Love.

Robert Randolph and Bootsy Collins playing Purple Haze, Foxy Lady and Them Changes. They stole the show up to that point. They had everybody up clapping their hands and people dancing up next to the stage on Them Changes.

David Hidalgo and Cesar Rosas of Los Lobos did a great Can You See Me. The also did a pretty good Hey Joe with Robby Krieger.

Jonny Lang and Brad Whitford absolutely rocked Spanish Castle Magic.

Kenny Wayne Sheppard played Voodoo Child (Slight Return) like nobody's business. There was one song played after this (Red House by Billy Cox) that was anti-climactic after KWS. They should have just ended it there.

They could have left Doyle Bramhall III off of the lineup as far as I was concerned. His songs were utterly forgettable. Other than that it was a great show.

Here's the setlist with the onstage/offstage of the various artists:

I'll post up some of my pics and a couple of videos I took once I download them off of my phone.

Here's a couple of videos from the Experience Hendrix show.

The audio and video aren't the best but it IS a phone. It still gives a pretty good feel for the show though.

Tonight myself and some of the neighbors are heading into NYC to see our neighbor's band Laughing Sky at a exclusive listening party in a loft downtown.

Should be a pretty cool scene. :D

Saw a reunited that dog.last night at Largo last play a sweet set that was almost completely different from their rocking set at the Troubadour last year. Tuesday is Costello's Spinning Songbook at Wiltern and then I'm off to weekend two of Coachella. When I get back Monday I'm seeing Jeff Mangum at Orpheum.

We had a great time at the show last night. Took a few photo's and I'll try and post them tomorrow. Laughing Sky played quite a few songs from the new CD as they transported us back to 1968 finishing with "The Slip", a 10 minute jaggernaut of psychadelic rock including a light show. Very groovy.

Place was packed with the usual crazy downtown types. I swear one guy was Johnny Depp, looked just like him and he was dancing like a crazed man with a cane, bopping all over the place and into everybody! My group was plotting to kill him. :D

The night started out great as I dropped everyone off at the address and then went on a search for a free parking spot on W24st.
Wouldn't you know a few cars down the block, there is a primo spot. wow!

Picked up a few trinkets of CDs, buttons, t-shirts and an 8Track tape.....yep, they were selling an 8Track tape of the new album. Very retro.....like their music.

Psychedelic rock is a style of rock music that is inspired or influenced by psychedelic culture and attempts to replicate and enhance the mind-altering experiences of psychedelic drugs. It often uses new recording techniques and effects and draws on non-Western sources such the ragas and drones of Indian music.

It was pioneered by musicians including The Beatles, The Byrds and The Yardbirds, emerging as a genre during the mid 1960s among folk rock and blues rock bands in United States and the United Kingdom, such as Grateful Dead, Jefferson Airplane, The Jimi Hendrix Experience, Cream and Pink Floyd. It reached a peak in between 1967 and 1969 with the Summer of Love and Woodstock rock festival, becoming an international musical movement and associated with a widespread counter-culture, before beginning a decline as changing attitudes, the loss of some key individuals and a back-to-basics movement, led surviving performers to move into new musical areas.
