I have the same problem with Jay. Could have been fixed easily. The Republic existed and somewhere else was the Empire, led by Palpatine (a Sith). Darth Vader turning leads to the ultimate defeat of the Republic and the death of all of the Jedi (except Obi-Wan and Yoda). Then the Empire expands by taking over Leia's property. Then you have the Empire not be a momentary enemy. And the prequels would actually have Star Wars in them.

You know, the only stars at war in this movie were Sir Alec Guinness and Peter Cushing. In an indirect way.

That's what I was thinking and wanting to see -- and along with it the feeling of vastness that I thought the saga had. I never read the Timothy Zahn novels growing up, but I had this sense of epic-ness about the Empire (both in being old and vast), and the prequels sort of wiped that whole sense of grandeur away by making the the struggle seem brief and small by comparison.

I can't wait until he's old enough to be digitally inserted in place of Hayden Christensen for the Mega-Super-Ultimate editions.

Apparently, in Star Wars: The Clone Wars, Darth Maul will be coming back from the dead. And in the exact way that the guy in the video in the beginning of the thread suggested.

If Boba Fett can survive the sarlacc pit in the SWEU, why not Darth Maul as well? (I know--somebody shoot me.)

Since I haven't memorized the dialogue and don't even recall them talking about the dimensions of the second station in relation to the first, I'm obviously a fake fan, so some real fan should tell me how long it took to build the second station. In any usage of "fake fan", it's never someone really being condescending and always a riff on John Byrne. I am also a fake fan, by his definitions, of most everything that I enjoy.

I'm lucky I know who John Lindley Byrne is, so that alone probably makes me a fake fan of something or another, but I've heard the term "fake fan" used in other ways apart from any connection to John Byrne. Anyway, in this context I simply mean there are many, probably in this very thread, who have a much greater memory of dialogue of Star Wars films, and an in-depth knowledge of the Star Wars universe. Since then I discovered actual dialogue has been altered from one version to another, unless what I've read is incorrect, such as ". . . son of Skywalker . . ." to "The offspring of Skywalker . . ." or some such, so it may be important to know the subtle differences. I was curious about when Darth Vader learned he had a surviving kid, and whether or not the emperor had directly lied to him about it, and if so, why that didn't blow up in the emperor's face. Or did the emperor not lie about that? I don't have copies of these movies handy and thought the quickest way to get an answer would be from somebody who was a real, solid fan of the films.

Perhaps, but not here, at IMWAN, generally. That's where I'm coming from. I wasn't being condescending then. I don't have copies of these movies handy and thought the quickest way to get an answer would be from somebody who was a real, solid fan of the films. It seems he knew he had a surviving kid from somewhere around the end of Episode 4, because in Episode 5 he speaks to the Emperor about his son (though he calls him "son of Skywalker"). He was not aware before then, because if he were, he'd have gotten to Luke on Tattooine long before. There's really no logical way to rationalize it though; the timeframe gets too compressed due to the prequel trilogy. It's just silly.

I've been watching the films in "machete" order (so far I've watched Episodes IV, V & II), and I've gotta say it works surprisingly well!

The entire idea Obi-Wan was trying to hide Luke from Vader on THAT planet, with THAT last name, and with Vader's relatives, seems doubtful. I never understood it. Is it possible that Vader knew about Luke before that, but considered him a non player down on some no where farm, so didn't care about him?

Why in the world wouldn't they call the kid Luke Lars and pass him off as their son?

Jeff wrote: More possible that Lucas is a terrible writer. Well, there's that, but in this case, isn't it more the case he simply hadn't written the story yet and, like many half baked stories that begin filming before it's totally down on paper, the changes as he went just didn't fit? I mean, he didn't even know Luke and Leia were siblings or Vader was really their father when he did the first film, did he? More things began to gel after the fact, and that's why things seem as hinky as they are. Steve wrote: Why in the world wouldn't they call the kid Luke Lars and pass him off as their son? They would have, if they wanted to hide him from Vader. But honestly, why use Vader's home planet then, or anybody with a connection to Vader, like his step brother? But if it's retroactively decided, then obviously that's why, yes? They were stuck with it and had to jam it in as best they could make it fit.

Yes, making Owen and Beru literally related to Darth Vader was moronic.
