Not only did he make the mistake of trying to shoehorn in some shots at Bush and the Iraq war, the entire trilogy is overstuffed with a preachy feel, like he's trying to connect the dots for us on why the Sith are the bad guys and the Jedi are the good guys. It's pretty clear. Stick to what works for this series. It's not War and Peace, don't try and make it into a morality tale about government and crap like that. Also that Jar Jar character was kind of irritating.

It's like what I said about Crystal Skull when he and Spielberg pussyfooted around Communists. Throughout the Prequel trilogy, yes, Lucas says that the Sith are evil, but the Republic and the Jedis aren't quite shown as perfect and honorable, culminating with Mace wanting to execute a defeated Palpatine for "the greater good" (one of the scrolls even describe the Clone Wars as "Heroes on both sides!" That stuff doesn't work in Star Wars, which is by itself all about absolutes. There is no Grey Side of the Force.

That stuff doesn't work in Star Wars, which is by itself all about absolutes. There is no Grey Side of the Force. Which is a flip side way of the same problem -- instead of just going with it, black hats and white hats, he kept trying to weave a web that sortf showed what makes the difference between good and bad. All these little touches, like the "dealing in absolutes" and hate and fear being related, and the way what ultimately turns Anakin is fear of not being able to protect his family. It was like he was trying to say "Look, I've figured out what evil really consist of." Which is pretty condescending. All of these things are not Star Wars. Or at least, George Lucas is in over his head trying to do things that way.

Way, way over his head. Lucas is good with broad story concepts, and he's pretty good with using his Campbell-inspired myth stuff to appeal to people, but he sucks at the particulars. In most Lucas' interviews I've seen, he talks about his story and what he wanted to do with it, but he rarely talks the people who made it. I think Kersh was the only one who actually talked about the actors themselves. The contrast is truly jarring.
I don't think the Prequels had a bad story per se, but Lucas should've realized that he wasn't the one able to tell it.

I think Lucas should do whatever he pleases with his creation, even if I think what he does is shit. At least two of 'em were good, right?

I think that had a big effect on how the actors interacted with each other and their surroundings. LOTR handled the meshing of minimal CGI, people, and real sets really well.

Jilerb wrote: But as a "wise" man once said, most people don't care about that, so Star Wars is the BALLS! - or some such reasonable paraphrasing to that effect. Ah, you still want to take jabs, I see. Look, Star Wars isn't some phenomenally well-written piece of work but the faults don't lie in a failure to explain technical or scientific flaws that no one but a "complete fucking dork" would care about. The movie is one of the most financially successful of all time, almost univerally praised by critics (94% positive score on RT), and is widely considered a landmark in special effects technology and widely credited with starting the "summer special effects blockbuster" trend. Your incessant whining about the technical flaws in the Death Star and photon torpedo trajectories just don't matter to 99.9% of people out there and would do nothing but slow down a movie aimed at the heart rather than the mind. So, please stop bitching and do us all a favor -- fuck off.

I think that had a big effect on how the actors interacted with each other and their surroundings. LOTR handled the meshing of minimal CGI, people, and real sets really well. I have praised Peter Jackson's for going the extra mile with giving his actors as much possible 'reality' to help them and to give believability to LotR, but I'm not sure Lucas failed that much in that aspect. Yeah, the CGI Clones were silly, and then there is that shot of McGregor and Christensen fighting in a completely blue room, but overall there were many sets built for the prequels. We go back to Lucas' inherent suckitude as a writer and as a director. Both CLONES and The Two Towers premiered in 2002, both feature extensive use of CGI in their climatic battles at the end, where large portions of them are nothing but a combination of CGI, maquettes and matte paintings. Yet, The Battle of Helm's Deep is gripping and poignant, and once you get past the feeling of "Holy shit there are hundreds of super awesome Jedis fighting in their prime", The Battle of Geonosis is cold and sterile.
