For what it's worth, this is two hours and sixteen minutes of music for five bucks.

Thanks, Andrew.

This was an absolute bargain, and it sounds great. Best $4.99 that I've spent so far this year

With today's high bandwidth, it's really time for mp3 to die & flac to become the 44/16 default.

The third album to be released on the Rolling Stones‘ archive website is a legendary show from the band’s tour of America in 1975. While the massive collection of songs is titled ‘L.A. Friday,’ it was actually recorded on a Sunday — July 13, 1975.

Fans get 24 remastered tracks for just $5 when they order the album digitally through the archive website (via Google Music). Hits include ‘Honky Tonk Woman,’ ‘Gimme Shelter,’ ‘Heartbreaker,’ ‘Angie’ and ‘Brown Sugar,’ the song the band kicked off the tour playing through the streets of New York City.

Ronnie Wood was new to the band that year, and the 44 date tour (including five at the Los Angeles Forum) was his introduction to America. The album was remastered by legendary engineer Bob Clearmoutain, who mixed songs like ‘Miss You’ and ‘Out of Tears.’

Previously the Rolling Stones had released a 1981 show at the Hampton Coliseum and a 1973 show from Brussels, in addition to tour photos from Ken Regan. The site promises more audio, film, pictures and memorabilia in the future.

If only these were on CD.

There's another thread about this going as well. I am so impressed at the release speed-- a show every two months for five bucks. If they keep this up (six shows a year? really? how fantastic), they will quickly go from one of the most stingy to one of the most generous old-guard bands ever. Very excited. This show is great-- not as good as Brussels 73, I think (which I rate as currently the best live Stones release of all time) but fun as hell-- 2 1/2 hours of outstanding quality sound and raggedly wonderful playing for five bucks.

To my ears, the Stones catalog is rapidly shifting in terms of essential live releases: I'd rate them this way so far--

1-- Brussels 73
2-- Get Your Ya Ya's Out Deluxe
3-- L.A. Friday 75
4-- Rock N Roll Circus
5-- Got Live If You Want It
6-- Hampton 81

Three of those have come out in the last five months! Wow.

Jeff

Exactly. I don't have the energy to deal with the downloading, much less paying for mp3. I'd have them all if they were on CD.

I still rate Ya Ya's #1. And it still pisses me off beyond belief that Europeans can buy flac, but in the USA our options are;

1. Avoid the product
2. Steal the flac edition; it's all over the internet
3. Buy the 00's version of 8 track, an mp3.

If I could buy these in flac for $10, I likely would.

With the widespread adoption of broadband, it's past time for mp3 to go away like the dinosaur it is.
I can dl a lossless flac cd in 10-20 minutes, & I'm only paying $45 a month (regular price, not a special) for my internet connection.

The Stones & Google made a HUGE mistake on the USA licensing.

Me three. I am old school. I will never ever pay for a "download" (let alone a lossy one at that). I view it as paying for air. If they want me to buy these then offer them on CD.

The record & movie co's stole the idea from the software co's; but even legally the physical medium is now immaterial, it's the content that's copyrighted. And for better (or more likely for worse) that is all they care about anymore.

I would love to have these shows on a commercially-pressed CD also, but that's not currently an option. Even if it were, they would not be available at such a reasonable price. Seriously, I have obtained all three of these releases for under $15 total, less than what one show would cost on a CD.

The files are encoded at 320kbps bit rate (the highest quality available for MP3's), and sound fine on my computer, phone, and portable devices. I have backed up the data to several platforms, including a USB flash drive which will probably outlive any CD and is not susceptible to surface scratches.

DanO, the download took less than ten minutes, and while it was kinda cumbersome (like Smiff said) and required a lot of mouse-clicks, it really wasn't bad. And the cost of five bucks was less than what I paid for shipping on my last AmazWAN UK order.

I am not happy that certain music is only available as a downloadable format, but that is the reality these days. Juliana Hatfield offered demoes of her last album, as a "pay what you can" download from her website. It would not have been economically feasible to press CD's for that, but I happily made a donation to the artist directly to hear the alternate songs. Sure, I probably could have downloaded them for free, but that would have been somewhat dishonest, and if everybody did that then the artist would have no incentive to make songs available next time.

YMMV, but I am glad that I was able to get these Stones live shows at an incredible price, and can enjoy listening to them, rather than doing without.

I picked up the '75 show last night for $4.99. The price was just too good to pass up, for a 25 song set (well, 24, plus a band intro that was apparently considered a song to purchase if bought separately. ). Since I bought it on my Android phone, it was extremely simple: click purchase, confirm, open my music app, and there it was. I was listening to it within 2 minutes in the car. Given the quality of speaker I'm usually listening to music on these days, MP3/FLAC just isn't an issue.

Given the crappy mastering on 1975, I'm also not sure if mp3/flac matters either.

Don't know what's with the Stones lately. The 2nd worst sounding hi-res album I've heard is Some Girls Deluxe. HORRIBLY COMPRESSED. Only the Rory Gallagher abomination of an SACD, Big Guns sounds worse.

Geff, I think the 75 show sounds great. Granted, I've only listened off my iPod, but I have no complaints. I have loads of boots that sound much worse.

it's my usual bitch: LOUDNESS wars compression. Don't know if it's as apparent on mp3 as on flac.

I know this may seem sacrilege here, but for live shows, I don't see much point in FLAC. The audio is usually distorted anyway.

I agree Jeff. I think of this Rolling Stones series as essentially being an official bootleg series, and I'm perfectly content with the sound quality. I listen to a boots that sound a lot worse. To me, these types of recordings are all about the performance.

To disagree, it's not at all a bad recording. it's soundboard & likely multi track. It was f@cked up by adding too much compression in mastering to make it loud & "modern'.

Is it too soon to start wondering what the next release will be? I would love a Sticky Fingers-era show.
