According to the Second Disc:

Friday Music has announced its own Chicago reissue campaign by arrangement with Rhino, and that series is kicking off with the return of (the now out-of-print) Hot Streets. According to the label’s Facebook page, it’s due in stores on March 27.

Friday’s edition has been newly remastered by the label’s Joe Reagoso and includes the same bonus track as the 2003 reissue, a version of Robert Lamm’s “Love Was New” with an alternate vocal by Dacus. The label promises that original graphics not seen since the original release have been restored for the new CD. In addition, new liner notes are included. (A. Scott Galloway provided the essay for Rhino’s 2003 edition.)

It is at this point that I must ask:
What do Friday Music really do? For my birthday I received the Yes "Yesshows" and Warren Zevon "Bad Luck Streak In Dancing School" remasters.
While both do sound very good and the original liner notes have been faithfully reproduced, there is no mention anywhere of remastering. Now, I also have the "9012Live: The Solos" remaster and it's the same thing. So, are these just reproductions of the newer Japanese remasters? If so, I have no problems with that, but why isn't whoever did the work on those credited?
Now, the Santana remasters I have do indicate Joe Reagoso did remastering, but most of the ones I have do not despite the website claims. Does Reagoso really do any new work on these?
And, as far as this Chicago remaster, the Rhino was fine and isn't this probably just a pointless re-release of something OOP that can be found for $3 used? It's the same bonus cut too.
So, new liner notes and some original graphics of which there can't be much are supposed to get me interested?
I don't get it. Same with the pointless David Bowie "Hours" remaster coming up, which again, may not really be a new mastering at all.
If Friday continue with the Chicago remasters as they say they will, hopefully they will fix the inexcusable errors by Rhino on Chicago 16 and Chicago 17 using some edited versions, and grant US releases for the long-overdue Chicago 18, Chicago 19 and Twenty One which were issued only in Japan.
As for this Hot Streets, while I love the album I can't see paying $13 for some new liner notes.

IP, are you referring to remasters of these albums being issued only in Japan? Because I remember seeing those on CD back in the day.

Yes-they were only remastered in Japan with bonus tracks. The common CDs can be found in any used bin.

Hot Streets seems like an odd choice for a remaster -- I don't recall it being a big hit -- but I guess the selling point is that it's out of print.

Yeah-makes no sense to start there. It was a hit though-went Platinum, peaked at #12 and produced 2 Top 15 singles in "Alive Again" (which they still play live) and "No Tell Lover". "Gone Long Gone" was also a modest hit, but why not start with the corrected versions of 16 and 17 or the non-US remasters of 18, 19 and 21???

I agree with IP on this! While the sound was fine for 16 and 17, I just cringe when I hear the chopped-up versions of "What You're Missing" and "Please Hold On" on the current Rhino remasters. Apparently, the Japanese market got the proper full-length versions.

Jim:
I agree those remasters of 16 and 17 sounded very nice, but Rhino dropped the ball with using the edits-inexcusable! The Japanese market did receive corrected versions of those titles in 2010 which again leads me to ask why is Friay reissuing (or remastering) an album that is commonly available and was already remastered just a few years ago and not the albums that haven't been remastered in the US???.

Mofi is doing CTA, II, VI, and 17 on gold CD.......so I will hold out for those titles.

Hot Streets is a good album - so I will give it a try upon release from Friday's Music.

That is a very good question. With this and the Bowie, it looks like they're just picking up what the major labels are leaving behind. It's a disturbing trend. At least this one, unlike Bowie, is more or less a duplicate of the Rhino disc...

Maybe they'll do Chicago III, which seems to be MIA over here... (why didn't they start there, anyway?)

Wait... WHAT?!?!?!!!? The last time anyone said anything about these was in mid-November of last year, and no one said anything about 17 then...

Yeah - if you go to Music Direct web site, search on CTA or Chicago II......in the write up, it also mentions VI and 17.

I don't care about the Mofi releases, but I'm sure those will be cool. But why is Chicago III MIA here? All of the albums from CTA to Chicago 17 were remastered by Rhino.

.

Why, exactly, is this a disturbing trend? They seem to be putting stuff back in print, and in some cases they add bonus tracks not on previous releases. They did George Benson's In Flight as a Deluxe Edition, adding a rare 12" mix of "The World Is A Ghetto" and a radio edit of "Everything Must Change". The name in the mastering credits in Joe Reagoso...and in my opinion this reissue sounds much nicer than the original '80s CD mastering.

I say putting out CDs in this era, and especially bringing things back into print in a physical CD format is anything BUT disturbing...

I liked Donnie Dacus' guitar playing with Chicago, even though he had a tough act to follow, and wasn't in the same class as Terry Kath. I was also happy to see Dacus' name in the credits of Billy Joel's "52nd Street" and Crosby Stills & Nash's "CSN". I happen to like "Hot Streets" a lot. It's certainly not a great Chicago album, but with those three killer songs (all singles?) in "Alive Again," "Gone Long Gone" and "No Tell Lover," you've got three different but equally catchy songs showcasing the amazing voice of Peter Cetera. It's been a few years, but I know there were at least a couple of other excellent songs on the album as well.

I actually bought a copy of that LP at a record fair a few months ago. It's in my to-be-listened-to pile. I will definitely listen for Donnie's contributions when I play it. Thanks for the heads-up.

The last time the Chicago catalogue came out, it was from Rhino, ostensibly a reissue label, albeit one run by a major record label. They reissued every Columbia album, with bonus tracks in most cases, and a couple of the Full Moon albums. That's sixteen albums. A major commitment.

Which, of course, Rhino flaked on.

Now the only ones left are the ones that generated hit singles. Hell, they haven't even let the first FIVE alone. Friday, bless their hearts, found out about this and decided to pick up the slack... by reissuing Rhino's version of the record. Nothing new, just putting it back out there.

The same thing for Bowie. "Hours" is an exact duplicate of the last version, released by ISO, Bowie's own label, distributed by Sony (plus, there was that two-disc edition). And "Hours" is the ONLY one from ISO that isn't available anymore.

And that's why this is a disturbing trend. Because it shows that the major labels really are in the process of giving up on physical product.

And as for the smaller labels filling in the gaps, I have two words: Collector's Choice.

Good Lord! Can we say hype? This album was where I got off the Chicago bandwagon but clearly it has some fans. For their sake, I hope this reissue is as great as the description above would imply.
