No words can describe this great second release from Complete 60s Records - because there are no words! This exciting new label from England is undertaking an unprecedented project to compile every single Billboard Hot 100 instrumental hit of the 1960s. Complete Pop Instrumental Hits of the Sixties, Vol. 2 - 1961 is the second in a series of releases that will definitively document the decade when the pop instrumental genre truly reached its zenith. (The first volume - 1960 - is still available.)

Rock, rhythm 'n' blues, country, and orchestral instrumental singles all vied for a spot in the Hot 100 weekly charts. Hundreds of them earned that coveted spot in history, and when this project is complete you'll own them all in the order they peaked on the charts! That way, you can experience them the way the world did in 1961. You'll hear how surf music evolved, how rock combos and orchestral arrangers influenced each other, and how easy listening emerged as a distinct sound during this golden decade.

Bert Kaempfert, Al Caiola, Billy Vaughn, Sandy Nelson, The Ventures - these giants of the genre are all here on Complete Pop Instrumental Hits of the Sixties, Vol. 2 - 1961. But, so are The Viscounts, The Texans, The Don Shirley Trio & Jack Eubanks. Who, you ask? All of them scored instrumental hits in 1961, but none of them have ever been on a CD before now. In fact, this 86-track, 3-CD set includes no less than 17 CD debuts and dozens of genuinely rare tracks - 50 in true stereo. That's nearly three & a half hours of music!

The research team at Complete 60s combed the vaults for the best possible sources for these wordless wonders, making sure to locate the original hit versions in true stereo whenever possible. Then, no less than three sound engineers carefully remastered the original recordings until the twangy guitars, pounding drums, and soaring strings practically leap out of your speakers. You'll be speechless! Thank goodness, however, writer Greg Adams wasn't at a loss for words. His detailed, 28-page liner notes include biographies of all 53 artists, plus release notes and chart information for every track.

The same creative folks who lovingly compile those great Eric CDs in the States are working on this project, so you know there's the same commitment to high quality sound and attention to detail missing from so many oldies collections. Why settle for less? Why take a chance with risky, off-brand, mediocre MP3 downloads of dubious origin? Simply put, if you love instrumentals (of any kind), Complete Pop Instrumental Hits of the Sixties is the final word!

Bump: added the Amazon link to the first post, which is already cheaper than ordering directly from the label (and might go lower still before Februray 21st). That's if you can stand to wait until the general release date and don't absolutely need earlier shipment. (Unlike Walter, who has been anxiously awaiting this compilation for 51 years. :-))

Let's just say that I like to encourage the label to release more of this kind of thing by ordering a little closer to the source. :p

Well, I still haven't picked up vol. one yet, so I guess this will force me to.

I picked this one up just recently and I wasn't disappointed. This is an exceptional release both in sound quality and value. The attention to detail that the compilers have displayed is impressive - all of the 86 tracks are the correct single versions which charted, sometimes for the first time anywhere in stereo, in contrast to other compilations which often feature album-only versions which differ from the hit singles. Although you may already own some of these tracks on other CDs, here, they are all in great sound quality under a single umbrella. And many tracks are being reissued for the first time since 1961. More of these volumes please!

Correct me if I'm wrong, but I think this series is being issued on a UK label.

There is another UK series called British Hit Parade that consists of box sets of the UK NME chart hits for each year, starting in 1952 and so far going up thru 1961. That is to say, a box set for every year featuring every UK chart hit for that year, which has now grown to multiple box sets for each year as the number of charted songs increase (more chart positions per weekly chart).

The premise behind this has been that the UK copyright on these recordings had expired after 50 years, and these compiling labels are now legally copying these expired copyrighted recordings and reissuing them on CD box sets, probably not using the original master tapes but instead using very high quality needle drops.

The EU just passed a copyright extension law this past September, extending performer rights on recordings from 50 to 70 years, expected to be implemented by 2014. What this means is that these US instrumental box sets made in the UK, and these UK pop chart box sets, will be coming to an end very soon. It looks like they will get through the year 1963, and then we'll have to wait 20 more years before 1964 can be issued.

It was a fantastic action plan, and I would have joyfully purchased all these pop chart boxes for 1962 and beyond (maybe even before 1962). Alas we can only hope that the official record labels with their new 70 year copyright extensions will get together and produce these box sets themselves. I'm guessing the odds on that are not too good, ugh...

If this is true, then it's too bad we won't get 1963, which was surf music's greatest year.

It also was the Beatles first year, which is the entire rationale for the law. Only surprise was that they didn't do it 6 years ago for Elvis. Though as a retailer, I've seen Presley's sales slow to a trickle the last few years, so it may just be that the industry isn't that concerned about him.

2014! .....I wouldn't hold my breath on that. This is not law as yet. It will only be (partly) effective if EVERY, EU member country gets it's act together and draws up new legislation.....and that is a long way off at this stage. Even if every EU member gets off its backside and actually drafts new laws, there are still many countries around the world who are not members of the EU and where the 50 year rule still applies, including Canada, so I doubt there will be much change, if any, to these PD releases which are welcomed by collectors. I have absolutely no sympathy for the record companies which treat their back catalog and buyers with disdain by continuing to do nothing with tapes that are sitting unused in their vaults.

I don't have the words as to how much I'd LOVE to see a fight between the USA & Canadian governments over the Beatles catalog!
