I agree with you about the track list itself of the M,D&M collection, but not with the mastering. Sure, there are very cheap remasters with bonus tracks and spiffy artwork out there to be had very cheaply, but they are brickwalled to death. Very hard on the ears at loud volume on any decent system, and absolute torture on headphones. The I-Pod crowd and folks who listen mostly in thier cars probably don't mind this, as that's the crowd all this modern-day mastering is targeting. Hell, who has a "stereo system" anymore, anyways??!! :sigh:
I think some people, myself included, are hoping that Vic Ansini, who masters a lot of Iconoclassic's cd reissues, can at least make the tracks on this compilation a bit more pleasing to the ear with better dynamics. Getting ahold of decent sources and not the standard digital masters Capitol is using for GF since the remasters could be what's holding up the cd reissue, but that's just speculation on my part.

In a nutshell, this is why brickwalling & the "loudness wars" pisses me off so much: Listening to music in this manner literally physically makes my body tense up & takes most of the joy out of the music for me.

Sure wish those of us who HATE brickwalling had a choice other than bootlegs & the occasional audiophile release.

I hope with JSayers that Vic Ansini can well remaster this comp. Vic is in my top 3 of engineers, so much so when I see his name noted it usually the tie breaker for purchase if I am on a fence about a particular disc.

This disc will be somewhat difficult, multiple sources and years involved, and since GFR played on 11 in most cases this should present some challenge. Eitther case when he's ready so will I. :}

Of course, any album relased on the "Iconoclassic" label is automatically both "iconic" and "classic."

Or neither.

I received my copy of this from Amazon yesterday. I've had it pre-ordered since July. There is a problem with disc 1. I had to go on a road trip last night and took this set along to listen to. When I loaded disc 1 into the CD player, it came up with a defective disc error. Disc 2 played fine.

This morning I thought I would check out disc 1 on the PC. I put it in and it started playing. There are no track breaks and it lists it as "GFR - Disc1 - FinalMaster" in windows media player and as "GFR-Disc1-DDP" in Explorer. Disc 2 is listed as an Unknown Album in Media Player and Audio Cd in Explorer.

I think I'll keep it and rip the files off Disc 1 and make my own copy. I wonder how many of these they shipped out.

Sent the Iconoclassic label an E-Mail about why no update or posting on their web site about problem resolution. Also, they need to revise the dates noted in their title.

Shame, Vic A. does excellent work and we have this type of quality problem, both on manufactured disc and web site titling. :ohno:

Disc 1 is the image files for the real disc 1. I was able to burn a CD with track marks by copying the folder from the disc to my hard drive and using Nero to burn from the image file.

This is what the label posted on SHF a fews days back.
New release date according to amazon is Dec.27

"To everyone that has been so patient with us and this release we have to unfortunately inform you all that we are again delayed. We are working with Amazon closely and our distributor Super D to straighten out this mess and provide you all with an updated and accurate release date.

We discovered a substantial mastering error on disc 1 of the release as we were about to ship and could not let the product reach our loyal customers with the mistake in tact.

We want to assure you that the release is coming soon and will be mastered in a manner that will hopefully reach the high standards that we have set for our label. We are deeply regretful but there really was no choice but to pull the faulty master before any customers received the album.

This release has been a disaster from the get go but in the end we hope that you will all be pleased with the result. Thanks again for yor patience and we are so sorry for the delay. We and our vendors will do our best to keep everyone informed.

If I'm not mistaken, this is Iconoclassic's first problem? I think this issue is minor compared to... ahem... other companies'.

Admirable stance on the part of the company. I guess I can wait another 6 weeks.

I was quite peeved about my disc 1 issue. I mean, this order was delayed multpile times. At least they answered my protest letter. I still feel justified in saying that their website should have the update on the pressing error and replacement options. I should not have to go "looking" for the news or answers on blogs (it wasn't on IMWAN) .:} And there is no excuse for getting the title date wrong, very sloppy.

To Iconoclassic:

Question:

What are we to do with the error in the production of Grand Funk
Railroad "Mark, Don & Mel 1960-71 CD "?

Shouldn't you have posted something on the Website about this?

By the way, you guys even got the title date wrong? If Vic Anesini
wasn't involved, nor would I be.

Rick A.

Their response:

Rick.

We are very sorry that you received a bad CD. None of them should have reached consumers as we had found the error before any product had shipped. I assume that you purchased it from Amazon. If that is an incorrect assumption please let us know.

There was no information on the website because if you Googled the issue on-line several blogs had mentioned the issue and our instructions for returns were posted directly in the blogs.
We also answered many direct inquiries such as yours. We are very sorry for your inconvenience and will replace your defective disc as soon as we receive factory replacements.

We are only aware of this problem occurring with Amazon customers and they are already in possession of replacement discs. If you are not an Amazon customer please let us know and we will replace the disc directly but all we have right now for you is a fully functional CD-R. Let us know how you would like to handle the situation and we are again extremely sorry for the inconvenience.

The replacement set arrived from Amazon, all is good now. This is the best GFR CD I have purchased with regards to sound (this includes the Past Masters discs).

The Jayhawks did a cover of "Bad Time" on their 1995 album "Tomorrow The Green Grass."

Just read on the Hoffman page that some replacements are being received with the same error with disc one.

Not good, I have my replacement copy on its way. Iconoclassic did respond to the poster(s) remarks and I can tell they are truly sorry. Will see on how this plays out.

Anyone wanting this best wait abit longer until they flush out the defective stock.

My replacement arrived Saturday from Amazon and Disc one played without any issue.

Have to agree with Eelkiller as well, best remastering as of yet for GFR. :ohyes:
I heard guitar strumming and guitar parts in "Closer to Home" that I never heard before.
Vic A. hits a home run again.

I still need to get this (I had the vinyl version and yep, that sounded great too).
