RiverCity Hobbies, La Crosse WI

I just want to add that my LCS, has two stories. The first floor is the actual store while the upstairs is all devoted to gamers (RPGs).

I love that kids leaving their bikes laying in front of stores is universal. Kinda comforting in an odd way!

Having that many bikes left lying on the ground in front of a store like that makes it look like some bizarre accident took place there!

My local comic book shop doesn't exist. There are only half a dozen or so in the whole state, NONE of them anywhere near me. There are two in Little Rock, one in Hot Springs, one in Fort Smith (across the street from a cemetery--and the store sells Catholic religious books as well as comics!), and a couple more I haven't visited.

Look at all those bikes just laying there in the sidewalk!

This is interesting.

The Comic Shop That Merged With A Coffee Shop

David Demarco, Jason Dasenbrock and Wendy Pivonka owned Legend Comics in Leavenworth Plaza, Omaha. They also owned Legend Coffee one block west in Wohlner’s Grocery Store.

Now then have become one. Legend Comics has moved that block to the Wohlner’s Grocery Store area, right next to Legend Coffee and has installed an internal walkway between the two businesses, encouraging custom to flow one way and then the other, and have hired fourteen new employees to cope with the now-expanded business. Cappuccino with your comic? Ground coffee with your graphic novel?

I don't know if anyone is close to the Omaha area and I have yet to go to the new store. But I think that Legends comics was one of the best comic shops I've ever been to. I used to live close to Omaha and would always stop by there on my way through town and I hope their new business venture pays off.

They stole the idea from one of my local shops, Cup of Kryptonite. They opened 8 or 9 years ago with the coffee shop/comic shop hybrid going for them.

Louisville used to have a comic shop with a superhero themed diner attached. It's not there anymore.

In downtown Indy is a small gaming shop with a coffee/soup/snack bar. Only been in there once, but I dug it.

Matt and I have talked about how cool it would be to have a coffee shop/comic book store around here.
Kinda like how Barnes &Nobles have Starbucks inside - gives people another reason to go in and look around.

My posts on the topic. I love the idea of a coffee shop with a comic book store aesthetic.

I loved the aesthetic of that place the teenagers were in in the movie Kick-Ass. It wasn't realistic, and they would need to get rid of the back issue bins, but they were in a coffee shop type of thing with cool posters and comics.

I think a coffee shop could do well if it just adopted indie comics as it's visual theme. Sure, sell some. But mainly just build the decor around that vibe.

I think it needs to be thought of as coffee shop first, some indie comics around second.

Kind of like you might adopt a music theme, or a skateboard vibe, etc.

The cool think about comics is that they are art, can lead to good posters and stuff. And just have some racks of indie comics around.

But I'm think daily revenue from coffee far outstrips comic books. People are used to paying $3 for a cup of strained water that will be gone in 10 minutes. They're not used to paying that for a comic book.

I miss barber shops with comic books. There was a time when that was S.O.P. You had a barber shop, you stocked it with a bunch of outdated comic books.

I remember some of those! When I was a kid, if a comic book was more than about 4 or 5 years old, I felt like I was holding the Magna Carta or something. Those dates seemed so far back when I had only been only the planet 10 years.

My cousin was only 3 years older than me, but his comic book collection seemed to come from a Golden Age (1975 - 1978)
