I'm chomping at the bit for big-budget sci fi I haven't seen recently or a million times before... and Avatar is one of the few I haven't seen a million times. In fact, I haven't seen it since the one time at the theater.

But the problem is, I remember it sucking so bad. I want to watch Star Wars or Raiders of the Lost Ark... but I've already seen them dozens of times.

I dunno, I just want cool effects and balls out action.

Loved Avatar for the visuals, but I doubt I'd ever rewatch it on the small screen. Giant 3D was definitely the be-all end-all for that one. Script was laaaaaame.

Hmmm. What are some maybe options for you...

The original Stargate movie with Kurt Russell?
Dune, either version?
The Last Starfighter? :)

Easily my least favorite James Cameron film. It sucks that he's making two more so we won't see anything different from him for a while.

I've yet to see Avatar. When it came out I was going through a lot of family stuff and then by the time it came out on blu-ray I had lost interest in it. The mention of Equilibrium is a good one. I might watch that tonight.

We just watched Equilibrium not too long ago.

I'm more in the "raw spectacle" market here anyway.

Hanzo, I forget, were you a BSG person? The quasi-standalone BSG movie, Razor, is intense and actiony and worth a rewatch if you only saw it the one time when it aired on TV.

Meh. Mediocre script, great visuals. I have seen it twice, could go the rest of my life without seeing it and not much care.

I've never watched a single episode of BSG.

Well, there's the BSG miniseries, then. At a three hour runtime it's not any longer than a LOTR flick...

Avatar has a few set pieces that rock if you have a large HDTV mated with a great sound system. But I agree with everyone else...its not much on a small screen with mono sound. One of those visual spectacle feasts but one of the lamest scripts of all time.

I've never seen Avatar and I probably never will. I just don't have the interest. Definitely not my kind of film.

I'm hoping John Carter scratches that Avatar itch for me.

I hope so as well... hope that Avatar's success doesn't poison the thinking and creative choices of the makers of JC.

I was at a Christmas party last night, and a friend of mine was telling us about this long-time friend of his that leads a dream life -- he's a genius, etc. Ran down all the things he's done, including a major role with Pixar in getting them where they wanted to be on computer rendering stuff. (In fact, bringing up Pixar is what started him telling us about him)>

Anyway, he said he was the lead designer for Avatar.

Without thinking or missing a beat, I kind of scrunched up my nose and said "I didn't like that."

It was kind of awkward. He recovered. But my social skills were in full force.
