This is an update on "The Yardbirds-Glimpses"5-CD box set from the UK label "Easy Action". 6 months after the label posted a tracklisting for this collection of concert recordings, radio broadcasts, interviews and soundtracks from T.V. performances, the set has yet to go to the pressing plant. The label stated twice before that they would begin accepting preorders, but that didn't happen. Then, they said that they received requested permission from Jimmy Page's representatives for several tracks. Now, they say that they'll send the project to the pressing plant in another two weeks, and begin accepting preorders in July. We'll see.

But, I should note that the box set is not such a big event as it seems at first glance. 40% of the material has already been released officially by other labels, specifically Castle Communications, EMI & New Millenium. The entire 5th disc is the exact same BBC disc as "The Yardbirds-On Air" or the first disc of "Where The Action Is". The Stockholm 1967 tracks were already offered on "Where The Action Is". The Marquee 1964 recordings were already released on Castle's "Live Blueswailing 1964" CD, and the four 1967 tracks from Offenbach, Germany have been released on the DVD "Beat Beat Beat:The Yardbirds" through a label affiliated with Britain's "Voiceprint" label. And the BBC versions of "White Summer" & "Dazed & Confused" were already offered(as bonus tracks) on EMI/UK's most recent expanded reissue of "Little Games".

An assortment of fans had expressed skepticism over this box(and whether it will be released) on a forum at the record company's website, and finally, some individual(apparently the label chief or owner) posted an angry(and obscenity-laced) rant, largely aimed at me, though I was not the first person to question whether this box set will be released. After this label chief or owner alienated the fans(whose grievances were legitimate, considering how long the label has teased the public with a tracklisting), another individual(possibly a mastering engineer for the project) did a brief, more conciliatory post, to try to smooth things over. I'd say, "too little, too late". If the set is released and internet feedback indicates reasonable musical or sound quality for the actual unreleased material, I might buy the set(despite the label's bad attitude towards the fans), but in the meantime, I'm putting this box set out of my thoughts.

Thanks for the update Phil. Do you know if any of the tracks are unbooted? What is the provenance of the outtake/demo material?

There may be some unbooted material, but it remains to be seen what the sound quality is. The BBC material(other than the previously released material on Disc 5) is likely to be off the air tapings. Liner notes writer Greg Russo may have found some better sources since I last communicated with him in the early 1990's, but the sources for the officially unreleased BBC tracks that he had back then(in the early 1990's) were pretty dismal; like a mediocre bootleg.

There's one obvious lesson to be learned from this Yardbirds project: Having a tracklisting for an eagerly awaited box set is, in itself, no guarantee that the box set will be released. I collect "Classic Rock" in a wide variety of styles, and I have noted that many people who want to buy The Beach Boys' "Smile Sessions" box seem to believe(as I once did) that the announcing of a tracklisting brings that project closer to reality or guarantees that it will be released. Perhaps not.

I'm perceived to be the bringer of bad news. I'm only the messenger. Don't shoot the messenger. I'll admit that I can (sometimes) be a strident "firebrand" when it comes to keeping the heat on labels and artists behind long-delayed CD releases(for example, The Beatles remasters & Neil Young's "Archives Vol.1") particularly when the release postponements drag on for years.

I should note that the proprietor of the Easy Action label was rather vicious, posting "Please don't mistake us for people who give a flying F@#k". I won't. The discussion of The Yardbirds "Glimpses" box fell almost totally silent on Easy Action's website. His contempt for all the people who had expressed interest in this troubled box set project is kinda shocking, but I guess the music biz is filled with characters like that.

Trivia note: I'm actually a very nice guy, even though I occasionally get stressed out over the music collecting hobby. It has been my main hobby for 44 years. When a hobby goes on that long, some stress is eventually going to enter the picture.

I actually work with a guy who asked "Now who's Eric Clapton? He was with the Eagles, right?" Wrong kind of bird was my reply. (And here I thought Clapton was pretty much a household name, being so mainstream these days).

I like the idea of more Yardbirds, if it's not all scratchy archival stuff like the stuff that's leaked out on these questionable European labels. Not so interested in a box set that includes all that I already have, though!

About a decade back when Eric Clapton met the Queen of England, she asked him "What is it you do?", to which Eric replied "I've been playing the guitar for 40 years". Eric has stated that he didn't expect the Queen to know who he is.

Nearly 10 months after the label posted a tracklisting for the box set, there has been no progress towards actually releasing the thing. My guess is that the legal problems, licensing problems, manufacturing problems or artist permission issues were insurmountable. On the forum at the record company website, the box set's art director has been boasting of all the wonderful Yardbirds T-shirts that the record company has printed. And so.....the record company just came up with something that they can do with all of those T-shirts, if the CD box set never happens: sell the T-shirts a la carte. WOW! What a brainstorm guys!

Would you believe.....today "Easy Action Records" started accepting preorders for the Yardbirds box?(£34.99 for the box set & vinyl single/ £44.95 for the box set, vinyl single + T-shirt). There's a choice of 3 different T-shirt designs. I went with the £34.95 package(I can always buy the T-shirt later, if I want). With all of the box sets coming this year, I have to allocate available funds carefully.

I'm kind of getting "boxed in" by all these box sets lately. I wonder how much of this is really unreleased and/or good. I have "gray area" CDs that might already have some of this stuff. Could be good. Could also be poor quality "archival" sounding stuff, hardly worth listening to. Any word?

Bannings: Not yet, but there's still time....
So, am I correct in reading these posts, that the only remastered cuts on this will be the BBC sessions?

And how much better sounding could they be than the 33 track BBC Sessions on Repertoire from 1999?

As much as I would like to see a deluxe, all-inclusive Yardbirds box, it looks like this isn't it....

If it turns out to be remastered however, that's another thing entirely....

:ohyes:

It's up now -- see the updated first post for links (and I've moved Robin's tracklisting up into the first post as well).

Bump: added cover image to the first post. Amazon UK's listing has just dropped below the £30 mark, so this might be a good time to pre-order and lock in the price:

Thanks Linda! I did the conversion to US dollars and sounds halfways reasonable. (As far as the recent influx of box sets goes, depending on whatever percentage of truly unreleased material there might be, especially in comparison to the Quadriphenia price). Think I should. Lock in on that price?
