Masters of Cinema will be releasing this in the UK on PAL DVD only. I will be doing a review of the release. I can already tell you it's absolutely essential classic horror (not only the last MAJOR missing Lugosi, but possibly the last major missing Universal horror), & really the only question is how well of a restoration they do. I have the official commercial VHS, & it's a pretty poor print. The above is all I know at this time.

It even has a music connection: I'm 99% certain that Devo got their catch phrase, "We are not Men, we are Devo" from a line in this film!

Edit: I just discovered there's also going to be a USA Criterion DVD/Blu release on 10/25. My GUESS is the quality will likely be comparable.

This is indeed a classic. Maybe it goes one step beyond Frankenstein in having man take on God-like powers or maybe it's the suggested sexuality between man and a beast made wowam by man.

It is one of the top 50 films of all time. Maybe top 25.

For reasons unknown to me, MOC has pushed the UK release back to 5/12/12.

Criterion still has there's scheduled for 10/25/11. Like most Criterion's it's ridiculously pricy (someone had to say it!) but this one is a MUST own for fans of classic horror.

There is a nice little write-up for this in today's USA Today.
I haven't seen the movie in about 40 years, and I'm really looking forward to getting it.$19.99 is actually a better price than I originally thought they might ask for this.

I have the VHS. It is a very good film, though not Lugosi's best (I am a huge Lugosi collector).

As much as I really hate to promote Deep Discount, another forum recently reminded me they traditionally do a half off Criterion sale in November. Whether they still will with the new owners remains to be seen for another week or so!

Barnes & Noble also has a half off Criterion sale coming up in November in store and online.

I grabbed a couple from the last B&N sale. I didn't know they had one coming up. The advantage to me with DD is no sales tax & a lower free ship threshold.

Thanks Jay, there is still one B&N in Tampa that has DVD's so I need to make a list and get their early. Islands will be one that is on it already.
