I've used Cool Edit 2000 "forever" and was hoping I could continue to do so when I bought a new computer last week. (My old one unfortunately spit the bit after eight years of solid service.) Anyway, I was able to move the software onto the new platform, but it's not registered for the new computer and won't work there.

I'd probably be willing to buy a new copy if I must (It's was a $69 item), but I am dismayed to find that the company has been taken over by Adobe, and Cool Edit 2000 has been replaced by a $249 piece of software!!

No way am I going to pay that, so does anyone have a recommended replacement?

I don't know what you do with audio, but for my purposes I use the open source program Audacity.
