I was thinking earlier today that it would be really unique to have a cd collection where you had nothing but mini-lp releases. It would literally be like a miniaturized-LP collection. You would never have to deal with jewel cases for one. Wouldn't take up as much room, you wouldn't even need to transfer them to vinyl sleeves. Maybe a collector in Japan can do this quite easily, I don't know.

Me too. It's already possible to maintain an all-MLPS collection for many, many '60s and '70s artists if you confine yourself to original albums. The '80s and beyond, not so easy.

Yes. Replicas of the original vinyl packaging, shrunk down to CD size.

I've got a bunch--surprise!
But I have many more CDs in jewel boxes and digipacks.

Just the post-Decca/London titles (US Virgin and a Japanese box set). Someday I'll order the Japanese Decca box.

At last count I had 200 mini LPs. I would have many more if they weren't so damn expensive.

They're kind of cool in a way, but I much prefer jewel boxes.
But I will admit to liking the digipak of KISS' Double Platinum remaster because it replicates the embossed silver foil LP cover and Led Zeppelin's In Through The Out Door Jpn. mini-LP, because it replicates the outer "brown paper bag" that the LP originally came in.

The more I re-read your comment, James, the more I think I should put the minis on their own shelves away from the rest of my collection in order to get that miniaturised LP collection effect. Too bad they don't make mini replicas of '70s audio systems to go along with the MLPSs. Recreate my whole teenage setup in miniature!

Yes! A multi-CD changer where the discs sit on a spindle and drop down onto the player, just like our old record changers! With an AM/FM radio, cassette deck and 8-track player, and a smoked plastic cover to protect it all!

The mini-lp replica of The Alan Parson Project's "Stereotomy", with the original 2-color vinyl cover sleeve over the album cover is another good example.

What's VERY cool about the In Through The Out Door mini-LP (well, the SHM-CD one, anyway) is the inner sleeve changes colors when moistened with water, just like the original LP. (Yes, I tried it.)

I have transferred all of my single disc titles and most of my 2-disc titles to vinyl sleeves. I file the mini-lp's amongst them and they do get lost in there. On some titles I have duplicate mini-lp style titles, such as for the Dramatics "Whatcha See Is Whatcha Get", were the tracklisting is different on each and one is in SHM format. The thing about the mini-lp format is, you aren't just paying for a format, they usually sound better because they are usually remastered. I only buy them on essential titles to me.

Kym, I just purchased this and I had misread your post as saying that it had the original LP "paper bag" outer cover. This mini-lp shm release replicates that outer cover, but it's a shiny paper slipcover, so I was a little disappointed. The regular mini-lp version has the paperbag outer cover, don't know why the shm mini-lp doesn't.

This "paperbag" stock is slightly different from the original mini-LP's, but it is not shiny. Are you sure you didn't receive a fake? There are plenty out there.

Mine is exactly as pictured on amazon, it's listed as a 09/10/08 release. The picture on amazon even looks like a shiny cardboard slipcover like mine is. I bought mine from a third party seller for about $22, it looks legit. Now it's really weird though if you say your shm is a paperbag issue. I did some further checking and amazon only lists one shm version, but on ebay there is one where it looks like a paperbag issue because the top of it has a jagged edge--like a paperbag. Plus the ebay one has the round shm sticker on it while mine doesn't, as pictured on amazon. It just occurred to me that I'm going on and on about a paperbag material cover vs. a replica, but hey, after "Stereotomy" I was expecting the same replication.
