This box collects The Kinks first seven LPs, Their albums from 'Kinks' to 'Arthur' as well as 3 extra CD’s collecting the EP’s and remaining Mono material as well as a 32 page, pop annual style book with new notes, rare photos, memorabilia, discographical information and more. Each CD is housed in a digipak, encased in a rigid Dansette style box to hold all the digipaks and book. Do any of our Kinks Eksperts know offhand if there are mono mixes missing from the recent Deluxe Edition series? This looks very nice, but it will be even more enticing if it includes otherwise unavailable versions.

WOW, that looks sweet. I hope there is enough of non-lapping mono tracks to warrant this. I love the new remaster series. Between the Kinks & the Queen catlg this year I am blown away.

Just inferring from the promotional copy, there might be some new material here. The mono versions of the first seven albums have indeed been included on the Deluxe Reissue series, and even the material on the "EP Disc" is likely to be among the various extra tracks on those same reissues. But there are also "Two discs entitled The Kinks mono Kollectables [which] Kontain [sic] various singles from around the world."

It wouldn't make sense to include two whole discs worth of singles from this era if they exactly matched various tracks on the other discs, would it? So perhaps these are different mixes that were made for various overseas markets. On the other hand, they could just be included to coincide with the the discographical info or the illustrations of various picture sleeves of which the compilers of these box sets seem so fond.

All in all, I'm not sure I'd be ready to spring for all this just to get two CDs containing vary minor variations on material I already have. I too wonder if there's anything really new here.

I also want to wait and see the track listings. If there's nothing new from the deluxe editions, I've been spending too much money.

Andrew Sandoval said on the Kinks listserver that the box will have a new mono mastering of Village Green Preservation Society.

(I'm guessing since VGPS isn't part of the new deluxe packages and didn't get the new remastering treatment of the other albums)

The tracklist is up. Except for some international versions of singles (which I have no idea how different they are), and the remaster of VGPS mentioned last post, there's not much new. I might have to pass on this.

It Might be even less expensive to order the seven 'Deluxe Edition' 2-disc sets of the albums released in this ear, and you'd be getting BOTH the mono and stereo editions plus all the singles and whole raft of bonus material to boot. You'd miss the rare Kazakhstan-only mono single mix of Autumn Almanac but most of us can live without that!

Have you seen the prices of those two-disc sets?

Yes, here they are (as of 10/05/2011, they fluctuate as frequently as oil futures) from AmazWAN UK:

The total is £79.91 and shipping adds another £9.02 for a total of £88.93. I think this price for 15 discs compares more than favorably to the 'just over £77' that the 10-disc mono set is going for. And, as I noted, the price changes from day to day. Yesterday, for example, the total - again including shipping - was several £'s less!! I'd advise checking frequently and then buying when it looks good.

Those Kinks mono/stereo two-fers are considerably more than that in the states.

Cool, but some (like mine) credit card companies charge a conversion fee when you order from amazon UK.
Hell, it might still be cheaper than buying them here in the states, I don't know...

Alright, I'm sold based on this alone. Sandoval's work on the other albums has been amazing.

Yeah, they pretty much all do, but it's rarely more than 1% because of some antitrust litigation they underwent (see http://www.ccfsettlement.com/home/ if you want the grisly details.)

So if the £ to $ conversion rate is $1.5626, as it is this instant, it would cost you $1.5783 for each £ you 'bought'. I've found Amazon UK to be way cheaper than anyone in the states, including Amazon US.

Capital One credit cards do not charge a foreign conversion fee.
My other cards had been charging a 3% foreign conversion fee.
