From antimusic.com:

Boston have moved to quell rumours they’ve split up after Michael Sweet announced he was leaving the band to focus on Stryper.

And Tom Scholz has revealed he’s nearly finished work on the long-awaited follow-up album to 2002′s Corporate America.

Sweet had played guitar and shared lead vocals since Boston gathered for a tour in 2008, with chief writer, guitarist and producer Scholz the only remaining member of the original lineup.

Last week he announced he was returned full-time to Stryper, saying: “My loyalty lies with the band I’ve committed almost thirty years of my life to. The music of Boston helped shape who I am as an artist, and the opportunity to be part of their legacy is overwhelming.”

But that led to rumours the band had split, leading Boston to announce: “We truly involved having Michael sing and play on stage. We have always understood his commitment to Stryper and with them the best of luck.

“However, Michael has not been involved in the recording of our next studio album, which is now 85% complete. Lead vocals include Brad Delp singing on many songs along with several excellent performances from our other three lead vocalists.

“The album reflects an intentional effort by Tom to capture the recognisable sound and energy of his original releases, combined with the musical sophistication expected within the framework of the well-known Boston sound.”

Sweet adds: “I feel the need to clarify that my statement did not imply that Boston is no more. They will continue on.

“Fans should be encouraged and excited about their future. As a fan myself, I’ll be the first in line when they tour and the first to purchase the next Boston record.”

Former frontman Delp committed suicide in 2007. In 2009 Scholz admitted studio work was “painfully slow” but vowed to complete the project to his usual standards.

I gave Scholz some leeway with a release date for the new album in the heading.

I guess if Brad Delp had recorded his vocals with the intention of them being on the next Boston album, it's okay, but these kind of post-death "new" recordings (Beatles, etc) kind of creep me out somewhat.

This has all the makings of a piece of crap. Scholz should release some live stuff from the original band.

Boston isn't even relevant anymore for me as a band releasing new material.

They really should be going.

I'm with John - the Boston that captivated me so long ago died a long, long time ago. It would be one thing if these interminable intervals between albums resulted in masterpieces, but they don't. It's somewhat unfair, but Boston was going to have a hard time getting the same kind of acceptance for any of their subsequent albums after the way their first was received (or even the first two). But their efforts were disappointing. I'd love to hear some live stuff, even some live video if it exists - I've heard that they were killer on the first tour.

When Corporate America came out, I put it on a listening station and kind of skimmed through it and all I remember thinking was, this doesn't sound like Boston!

The golden age for me was the first three albums. Scholz is just living off the name and the legacy these days.

Brad Delp was a major part of the Boston sound and I think Scholz should have retired the name for good after he died.

But I guess it's his to do whatever he wants with and I can't do anything about that.

When Boston's debut LP took off, I was fascinated by the idea of a scientist recording a best-selling album in his spare time. We saw the group play shortly afterward, and I remember being disappointed by how ordinary it all seemed. Never have seen them in concert since.

The only pro-shot footage (other than some promo videos) of Boston from 1979 Giants Stadium. Has a timecode and identifier in the middle and goes between black and white and color, but when this leaked out a few years ago I couldn't believe it-and it's great (rough spots and all)!
Boston were really only an actual band for the first two albums and tours. After that it was basically Scholz, Delp, lawyers and sessionmen. Now, well, Scholz has a right to do what he wants but I'm not really interested. And Corporate America was downright terrible.

That's really cool! I'd never seen that before - they did a pretty impressive job nailing those harmonies. It's a shame they couldn't keep things together.

I seem to recall an in-depth article on the first Boston album in Record Collector years ago, and I was surprised to learn that most or all of the songs were recorded by Scholz, Delp and maybe one or two other guys, and they shopped those recordings to record labels. When they eventually got signed (to Epic, right?), they needed to put together a "band" for touring & for the album sleeve, and so the guys we know as members of Boston (including Sib, Fran, and possibly Barry) didn't actually appear on the debut. My memory is probably a bit hazy about some of these details, but you get the idea.

The "golden age" of Boston for me was the first TWO albums. The problem that Boston had was that they all had the same sound--they sounded like Boston. It was a double-edged sword for them--you wanted them to sound like Boston but the songs were also repetitive.

What is "Mission Aborted"? That clip sounds like a demo, so is it a bootleg collection of their demos?

Can anyone confirm my recollection of that Record Collector article?

Producer Eddie Kramer was offered the job of producing KISS's Alive! and Boston's first album at the same time. He listened to Scholz's tape and said this is perfect, I can't add anything to this. Scholz of course proceeded to re-record the songs anyway and the rest is history.

All the guys are on the first 2 albums although a few tracks featured primarily Scholz on all instruments and of course Delp on all vocals.
Sib Hashin plays all drums on the debut except Jim Masdea is on one song. I think Barry Godreau and Fran Sheehan are only on a few cuts though.
As for Don't Look Back it's pretty much all the band although Scholz played most of the bass.

For the debut, it was John Boylan who was told to produce the album. He agreed with Scholz it was fine in the demo form so he had the others in the band do some arrangements while Scholz basically re-recorded parts in his home studio to make Epic think they were re-recording the whole thing. Boylan did produce the vocals.
I do know that the original tapes and maybe the re-recordings were transferred from 12 to 24 track with a mobile unit that (I believe if I remember reading this right) was parked outside of Tom's house.
I never heard Eddie Kramer was involved but if he was, what he said was totally correct-it needed no changing!
Probably true knowing Scholz.

Eddie Kramer felt that the production of Alive! was more of a challenge and that Boston's wasn't and the rest is...

(wait for it)
