Product Description
From 1978 through 1988, Journey was undisputedly one of the most popular and successful bands in the US. Their original studio albums were massive sellers, with more than 30 singles reaching Billboard's Top 100 charts. Journey's success grew with each release, selling out stadiums across the U.S., and for all intents and purposes inventing the AOR radio format (Album Oriented Rock). During the band's hiatus in 1988, the Greatest Hits album was issued, surveying 15 tracks from the band's 7 albums. Over the years, Journey's music has been used in films and recently in several high-profile TV shows (particularly the song "Don't Stop Believin'"). Now 16X Platinum in the U.S., Journey's Greatest Hits has taken on a life of its own, garnering new fans who have discovered the band through shows like Glee, Family Guy, The Sopranos and American Idol. But as successful as Greatest Hits is, it's only a part of the Journey story. Several Top 40 and Top 20 singles were not included, as well as songs near and dear to principal songwriters Steve Perry, Neal Schon and Jonathan Cain. For those who love the Greatest Hits and want more, Columbia/Legacy is proud to release Greatest Hits Volume 2.

1. Stone In Love
2. After The Fall
3. Chain Reaction
4. The Party's Over (Hopelessly In Love)
5. Escape
6. Still They Ride
7. Good Morning Girl
8. Stay Awhile
9. Suzanne
10. Feeling That Way
11. Anytime
12. Walks Like A Lady
13. Little Girl
14. Just The Same Way
15. Patiently
16. When I Think Of You
17. Mother, Father (Live In Houston 1981)

This tracklist looks similiar to disc 2 of The Essential Journey. I have that, but I'll probably get this anyway because once you go catalog... :D

zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz................................................
P.S.
Columbia only has rights to one non-Perry album-aside from the 1st 3-the real Journey albums. :p

And yet, I'll probably get it. I've never picked up any of the 1970's-80's Journey albums, other than the Greatest Hits disc. I don't know why I never explored their work further, but this might be an opportunity to do just that. (Oddly enough, I did buy Trial By Fire, Arrival, Red 13, and Generations when they were released. Go figure. )

I don't have the chart data, but while some of these may be legit top 40 hits and/or single releases, calling this a "greatest hits" seems to be somewhat of a stretch.

On the other hand, I'm surprised it took Sony this long to release this, as the original Greatest Hits was a mighty seller.

This is one reason why Steve Perry doesn't have to record and/or tour to live out the rest of his years.

This is a semi deep cuts compilation, which is good for casual fans who may only have bought the first GH and might get this one as well.

Of course, there are veteran ICErs who will buy it "just because" and that's reassuring.

OK, I'll bite since I'm a chart geek:
1. Stone In Love (#13 AOR 1981)
2. After The Fall (#23 1983)
3. Chain Reaction (nope! Did have an awful MTV video)
4. The Party's Over (Hopelessly In Love) (#34 1981)
5. Escape (nope!)
6. Still They Ride (#19, 1982)
7. Good Morning Girl (#55 1980)
8. Stay Awhile (#55 1980-these two were a double A-side)
9. Suzanne (#17 1986)
10. Feeling That Way (nope!)
11. Anytime (#83 1978)
12. Walks Like A Lady (#32 1980)
13. Little Girl (b-side nope!)
14. Just The Same Way (#58 1979)
15. Patiently (nope!)
16. When I Think Of You (nope!)
17. Mother, Father (Live In Houston 1981) (nope!)

So, let's see...7 non-hits (although a few like Escape and Feelin' That Way are classics) and 1 AOR only hit. Also, 4 non-Top 40 singles (although again, Just The Same Way and Anytime are classics) and a b-side and a live cut and a few idiotic album cut choices (When I Think Of You???).
How many actual Top 40 hits? 5.
What chart songs are missing?

Too Late (#70 1980)
Why Can't This Night Go On Forever (#60 1987)
Raised On Radio (#27 AOR 1986)
Only Solutions (#22 AOR 1982)
Natural Thing (#32 AOR 1993 a 1979 b-side)
Dixie Highway (#30 AOR 1981)
Message Of Love (#18 AOR 1996)
Can't Tame The Lion (#33 AOR 1997)
If He Should Break Your Heart (#21 AC 1997)
All The Way (#22 AC 2001)

Plus, let's face it, some key album cuts are absent such as Where Were You, Line Of Fire, Do You Recall, etc.

Of course you couldn't put all these on there, but Message Of Love, Too Late and Raised On Radio are all more sensible and better choices than stuff like Patiently and When I Think Of You! As usual, sloppily put together with hopes the masses will but it at Wal Mart. Unlikely big sales will be here, and maybe John can but Volume 3!

Actually, I want to re-listen to the Augeri stuff and put together a Augeri/Pineda playlist for my iPod.

But the Escape lineup will always be the classic Journey era for me.

he should pacify himself and just release a best of neal schon:

it could include his second leads in santana, his journey guitar solo's, bad english, his solos with jan hammer, abraxas pool, and all that great stuff from his 8, that's right 8, solo albums that sold like wildfire.

I wished I'd gotten the Schon and Hammer compilation that came out in the late '90s. It's OOP and mega-expensive now.

I think Schon is a talented guitarist and I like when he does rock stuff outside Journey (HSAS, Soul SirkUS, etc) and it's too bad he never did some instrumental fusion albums like Jeff Beck did in the '70s, because some of his Santana and early Journey stuff was in that vein.

Now renny, if you want to rag on Journey for the singer changes and multiple compilations, fine, that's your thing, but Schon has played some amazing stuff over the years.

Is there any chance in Hell this will ever stop? Any chance? Maybe? Please? Pretty please? I'm actually begging you.

What are the odds they'll fix the gap between "Feelin' That Way" and "Anytime"? I might pony up at the right price for that.

I'm out. As I posted on another thread, I once owned the box set, & while there's little bad on it, it just wasn't something I was going to play much. When I think prog, I don't think Journey! I ended up with GH, Escape, Captured & Dream After Dream; & other than I'd really like a sonic upgrade to GH, I'm good.
