Dexys Midnight Runners reveal they’re working on their first album since 1985

Dexys Midnight Runners have revealed that they are working on their first new album since 1985.

It’s been over 25 years since the release of their last studio LP 'Don’t Stand Me Down', but the band – who are now known simply as Dexys – confirmed on Twitter.com/dexysofficial that they had been rehearsing in the studio and hoped to release the new album in 2012.

As well as sharing three pictures of themselves working in the studio, they posted a message which said: "Dexys new album. Can't really say why, because it's hard to put down to any one thing, but it's working – it's early days, but so far so good.”

The band’s Twitter account, which was set up in June, also reveals their current line-up. As well as singer Kevin Rowland and original Dexys Midnight Runners bassist Pete Williams, former Style Council keyboardist Mick Talbot – who briefly played with the band in the 1980s and joined them for their 2003 reunion and live shows – is part of the group, as is guitarist Neil Hubbard.

Dexys Midnight Runners had two Number One singles – ‘Geno’ in 1980 and ‘Come On Eileen’ in 1982 – before they split up following the release of ‘Don’t Stand Me Down’ in 1995.

In 2003, they reformed for a tour and released the compilation album ‘Let’s Make This Precious: The Best Of Dexys Midnight Runners’. In 2007, Rowland posted a demo called ‘It’s OK Johanna’ on his official MySpace page, which was the first track made available by the band for 22 years.

Dexys Midnight Runners to release first new album in 27 years

Dexys Midnight Runners are set to release their first album in 27 years.

'One Day I'm Going To Soar' will be out on June 4 and makes for their first release since 1985's 'Don't Stand Me Down'. The band announced the news via their Facebook page.

They added that they are currently looking at venues for a forthcoming tour in support of the record. They also posted a link to a YouTube clip called 'Now – The first 2 minutes of the new Dexys album'. Scroll down to listen to the audio, which is accompanied by new press shots of the band.

Dexys Midnight Runners released their three studio albums in the first half of the 1980s, with their debut, 'Searching For The Young Soul Rebels', in 1980, 'Too-Rye-Ay' in 1982 and 'Don't Stand Me Down' in 1985.

The band's frontman Kevin Rowland became a solo artist in the late 1980s but in 2003, Dexys Midnight Runners reunited for a tour and the release of a greatest hits album, which featured two new songs.

A new album has been touted by Rowland since 2005.

Dexys announce full details of new album 'One Day I'm Going To Soar'

Dexys Midnight Runners have announced full details of their new album 'One Day I'm Going To Soar', their first studio album for over 27 years.

'One Day I'm Going To Soar' will be released on June 4 and is the band's first studio album since 1985's 'Don't Stand Me Down'. It will be released under the name Dexys and features the band's members Kevin Rowland, Mick Talbot, Pete Williams and Jim Paterson as well as new recruits Neil Hubbard, Tim Cansfield, Madeleine Hyland, Lucy Morgan and Ben Trigg.

Speaking about the album, the band's frontman Kevin Rowland said: "I couldn’t have made this record five years ago. Or 10 years ago. Everything seemed to fall into place. I already had many of the songs around for a while written with Jim Paterson and others but was struggling to take them forward. Then I realised I needed heavyweight help and ran into Mick Talbot. Soon it became obvious that Pete Williams should play the bass."

He continued:

Quote:
It seems like the stars were aligned. Everything seemed to work, whereas previously, it hadn't. It seemed there were so many people willing this to happen and keen to put in as much time and effort as was needed to make it live up to its potential. This is a Dexys record, not a Kevin Rowland record.

The tracklisting for 'One Day I'm Going To Soar' is as follows:

'Now'
'Lost'
'Me'
'She Got A Wiggle'
'You'
'Thinking Of You'
'I'm Always Going To Love You'
'Incapable Of Love'
'Nowhere Is Home'
'Free'
'It's OK John Joe'

The band will also play two UK live dates to celebrate album's release. They will headline Glasgow's Cottiers Theatre on May 6 and London's O2 Shepherds Bush Empire on May 8.

I wonder if "It's O.K. John Joe" will turn out to be "It's OK Johanna" with new lyrics.
