Muse at T In The Park: 'We'll definitely start working on a new album next year'

Muse bassist Chris Wolstenholme has confirmed to NME the band are set to start work on a new album in 2011.

The star said the trio plan to head into the studio for the follow up to 2009's 'The Resistance' after they take some time off from touring. Watch him talking about Muse's plans in a video below.

"We'll definitely start working on a new album next year," he revealed before adding: "I think we'll definitely take some time off after this touring period because it's something we've never done. I think the most time we've had off is about six weeks in the last 12 years, so we're due a break."

Muse headlined the Main Stage on the opening night of T In The Park on Friday (July 9).

Speaking about this year's three-day bash, Wolstenholme added: "It's been pretty good here. I think it's the first time I've been to T In The Park and it's not rained which is always a bonus because any festival you do, the weather always has a massive impact. Last time we were here it was terrible."

Muse to return with 'softer' new album next year

Muse will return with a potentially "softer" album next year, the band have revealed.

Drummer Dominic Howard and bassist Chris Wolstenholme spoke about the plan to NME at this afternoon's (May 19) Ivor Novello Awards ceremony in London, where they won the International Achievement award.

After revealing that they were planning to put out the follow-up to 2009’s 'The Resistance' in 2012, Howard said that the album could mark a shift in style for the band. "Matt [Bellamy, frontman] showed me a few chords recently," he said. "Who knows, it might be softer rock, but then it's up to me and Chris to make it heavy again. A heavy rock lullaby! But I'm sure it will move forward in some way."

Wolstenholme explained that the band had been jamming on the road ahead of sessions later this year. He added: "We've got Reading Festival [plus the Leeds Festival, with them set to headline both] in August and maybe a few weeks off after that. So September, October time we’ll get into the studio and start writing and working on the songs."

Howard concluded: "It takes as long as it takes really, because you have to love it before you can just chuck it out there and into the real world. But definitely next year."

I like these guys, but my one complaint is that everything they play is like the most bombastic parts of Queen's catalog. With a little more dynamics they would be a lot better, so the idea of a "lighter" album sounds very encouraging.

Muse dismiss reports that they are set to start work on new LP without Matt Bellamy

Muse have dismissed reports that they are beginning work on their new album without singer Matt Bellamy.

It was reported yesterday (June 1) that the band would be starting work on the follow-up to their 2009 fifth album 'The Resistance' without Bellamy, but bassist Chris Wolstenholme has now said this isn't true.

Responding on his Twitter page Twitter.com/ctwolstenholme, the bassist said of the article's original source, a report in The Sun, "So to clear things up amongst any readers of The Sun out there, its all a load of bollocks."

Muse to begin recording sixth album in September

Muse will enter the studio to begin recording the follow-up to their 2009 fifth album 'The Resistance' in September.

Bass player Chris Wolstenholme said that the trio will be heading straight in to the studio after they headline Reading And Leeds Festivals at the end of August.

Speaking on BBC Radio 1, the bassist said of the band's recording plans: "September and October, that's when we're going to get into the studio to start writing the new album."

Wolstenholme also indicated that the band have no intention of scaling back on their live commitments in the future, despite having had a fairly quiet 2011 in terms of live dates.

He said:

Quote:
We're always going to be the kind of band that want to get out and play live. As the years go on there's that temptation to cut the touring down less and less but we still love playing live. I can't ever imagine we'll be the kind of band that cut the touring down significantly.

The bassist also said that the band would not be debuting any new material during their Reading and Leeds headline sets.

He added:

Quote:
It's difficult to bring new songs into the live set before you record them with the internet and dodgy recordings of live songs getting out there before they've been released on an album. People tend not to play new songs live any more. That's why we want to get into the studio, make another album and then tour it.

Muse aiming to release their new album in October 2012

Muse are aiming to release their sixth studio album in October next year, according to their manager

Anthony Addis, who looks after the Devon trio, has said that the band are in the studio now and have "lots of material" written for the album.

Speaking to Billboard.biz, Addis said of the band's progress in recording the follow-up to 'The Resistance': "They've now gone into the recording studio. The plan is to do it all in London. Hopefully, the album might come out October next year."

He continued:

Quote:
They've written a lot of material already but you don't know how it's going to gel between them all. They write constantly. They write on the road, so before or after a gig they'll write nearly every night. It's a serious process, but you don't know how it's going to turn out until you start practising it together, because everybody's done it individually.

Muse most recently headlined this summer's Reading And Leeds Festivals, playing a set that included the entirety of their second album 'Origin Of Symmetry'.

Muse: 'It feels like it's time to do something radically different on our next album'

Muse's Chris Wolstenholme has said that the band want to do something "radically different" on their next album.

With the band currently working on the follow-up to their 2009 album 'The Resistance', the bassist told Kerrang! magazine that it felt like they were "drawing a line" under their past and were eager to embrace new ideas.

He said:

Quote:
[The band] feel like we are drawing a line under a certain period of what we've done in our career. It feels like it's time to move on and do something radically different.

However, he also admitted that it wasn't always easy to progress and push their sound forward, adding: "But then you could get into the studio and go back to what you're comfortable with. You get in the studio and there's a natural process and you have to see where a song will take you."

Muse's new LP will be their sixth studio album and is due to be released in late 2012. The band have not given any details on who will be acting as producer for the record as yet.

Muse offer behind-the-scenes glimpse of new album sessions

Muse have tweeted photos from inside their LA studio as they record the brass and string sections for their new album.

The album, the follow-up to 2009's 'The Resistance', is scheduled for release in October 2012 and will be the Devonshire trio's sixth studio LP.

Writing on their official Twitter page, the band said they had just recorded some horns with "legendary players". They added:

Quote:
Now some strings. This album is coming along nicely. Bring on the Autumn!

Muse videographer, Tom Kirk also posted pictures from the LA sessions on his personal Twitter account.

One photo is of Matt Bellamy working out an orchestral score with composer David Campbell, who has previously worked with Radiohead on '15 Steps' and U2's Broadway musical Spiderman: Turn Off The Dark.

Muse bassist Chris Wolstenholme has previously said that the band want to do "something radically different" on their new album.

Meanwhile, the band are nominated for Best Band, Best Live Band and Most Dedicated Fans at this year's NME Awards, which is taking place at London's O2 Academy Brixton on Wednesday (February 29).
