The analysis here is that the Pens are essentially done with free agency for the year - possibly a role-player signing, but that's it. Shero said the big thing for the team is getting a healthy Crosby and Malkin back in the lineup and having those two and Staal for the season. He also said the big free agency concern is in two years when they can redo Crosby's and Staal's deals. Two years from now is going to be VERY interesting around the Penguins - barring trades, their pending free agent list looks like, well, a roster - Adams, Dupuis, Kennedy, Crosby, Staal, Cooke, Letestu and Lovejoy all become FA that year according to the report I saw.

That's going to be pretty scary in 2 years. I think Malkin would be the following year.

If there's enough for a role player,,,,,maybe Christian Ruutuu can come back on the cheap for 1 year. He would add more to the dynamic of games vs. the Flyers.

I think Jeffrey still hasn't been signed yet either.

RIght - Jeffrey isn't signed, and Malkin's deal is up a year after Crosby.

And that was Jarkko Ruutuu who played here - Christian played for Calgary, as I recall.

The story in the PG today said they're not likely to sign an enforcer to replace Godard, and if they do, it might be someone on a two-way deal who's called up for certain games. A surprising stat in that article - 19 different players had fights for the Pens last year, 15 still with the organization. I think Talbot, Rupp, Godard and Goligoski are the ones who are gone.

Interesting. It still seems that minus Rupp/Talbot, plus Sullivan...they're a smaller, less physical team.

Engelland will need to get into the lineup more.

Definitely smaller. Not so sure about less physical - a lot's going to depend on who takes the Rupp/Talbot spot in the lineup. Asham should be there full time, Engelland should be a regular (still not sure why they didn't work him into the TB series more). The 19 players surprised me - I know the Pens either led the league in fights or were right up there, but they hardly struck me as being Broad Street Bullies-vintage. The late-season Islanders game aside, there were very few 'staged' fights - everything seemed to develop sort of naturally during the games. (Not to say that there weren't 'pre-arranged' fights, just nothing that got out of hand.)

I don't expect that to continue this year - I think it was a fluke. And Engelland establishing himself played into it. He won't have to prove anything this year - in fact, I'd bet his fighting numbers were way down in the final quarter of the season because players were no longer challenging him or accepting his challenges. And if Cooke really does change his style of play, I'd expect his numbers to be down as well. The big question mark will be how they respond to any physical play around Crosby - if they take exception to every little bump, then my guesses will be all wrong.

I see the Igloo is finally about to get demolished....too bad, but I guess it had to happen. I hoped they could save the roof and put it on top of a shoppping mall or somewhere, but it won't likely be the case.

I guess they got more toughness.....Steve MacIntyre. He looks like someone who will either be in the minors, or only dress for a small amount of games next year....as Goddard had done. 34 games, 4 points, 157 penalty minutes.

Jeffrey was resigned as well.

And Godard signed with Dallas for $750k/year. Don't remember how many years.

There is a lawsuit being filed over the demolition of the Civic Arena, but in reality, it's ultimately bound to fail. The fix was in on the arena's fate years ago, when the new arena deal was struck. The pro-demolition folks just won't admit that it's purely to give the Pens and sports authority more money and nothing to do with viability of any alternative uses, like what was done with the Montreal Forum or Maple Leaf Gardens. Any hope Civic Arena fans had should have been crushed when the historic review commission looked at the Arena - a unique building, with a unique feature, uniquely tied to the history of the city - and said there was nothing historic about it. Just be glad these people never got a shot at things like the Coliseum, the Parthenon, etc.

Chris Osgood has retired.

ESPN just reported that TB signed Stamkos - five years, $37.5M.

Goaltender Patrick Lalime has retired - he'll become an analyst for the Senators.

Lalime set an NHL record in 1996-97 by going undefeated in his first 16 appearances.

True North Unveils Jets Logos

True North Sports & Entertainment is proud to unveil today the primary and secondary logos for the Winnipeg Jets Hockey Club which will begin play in the National Hockey League in 2011.

The design for the new logo, which was developed in partnership with Reebok and the NHL, was inspired by the logo of the Royal Canadian Air Force.

“True North Sports & Entertainment felt it was important for the new Winnipeg Jets to develop a strong new identity,” said Mark Chipman, Chairman & Governor of True North Sports & Entertainment. “We felt it was important to authenticate the name Jets and we believe the new logo does that through its connection to our country’s remarkable Air Force heritage, including the rich history and relationship that our city and province have enjoyed with the Canadian Forces.”

True North Sports & Entertainment would also like to thank the Department of National Defence for their assistance in the process.

“We have always had a close relationship with 17 Wing throughout the years, dating back to our annual Manitoba Moose Military Night,” said Dorian Morphy, Senior Director, Marketing & Brand Management of True North Sports & Entertainment. “We are thrilled to be able to continue this relationship in a significant way. The design cues for the plane were inspired by the military jets flown by the Air Force over the years. So not only were we able to establish a new identity for our brand, but we were able to maintain a traditional, time honoured look to the logo.”

The Winnipeg Jets will unveil their uniforms and uniform colors at a later date.

Fans can purchase Winnipeg Jets hats, t-shirts, and kids wear IMMEDIATELY at the new team store “Jets Gear”, formerly known as “Off The Rack” Moose Store, located at the corner of Portage & Hargrave. The store will be open tonight until 10:00 p.m., tomorrow, Saturday, July 23rd between 10:00 and 6:00 p.m. and then on Sunday from noon to 5:00 p.m.

Jets forward Eric Fehr will be signing autographs at the store tomorrow from 12:00 to 1:00 p.m.

I think the new logo sucks. The old one was much better.

I think the new logo is rather sharp. I like it but I still hate the unoriginal name. The old logo always looked like a drawing by a child in the 70's to me. Probably was. I still think the fans in Atlanta got a raw deal from PATHETIC ownership.
But it is nice to see Winnipeg back in the NHL and hopefully the fans support it as they do the CFL's Blue Bombers. I think they will.

Pens D Brooks Orpik had hernia surgery this week - recovery time is 6-8 weeks, so he's expected back for the beginning of training camp.

A sad story gets sadder...

http://www.thehockeynews.com/articles/4 ... tated.html

Quote:
Derek Boogaard's brother charged in player's overdose, brother 'devastated'
2011-07-22 11:56:00
MINNEAPOLIS - NHL enforcer Derek Boogaard had been out of drug rehab for just one day before his younger brother gave him an unprescribed narcotic pain pill at the start of an evening of night-clubbing, drug-taking and heavy drinking that resulted in his death, prosecutors alleged Friday.
A complaint filed in Hennepin County District Court said Aaron Boogaard, 24, told police he gave his brother a single oxycodone the night before he found Derek Boogaard dead in their Minneapolis apartment May 13. Derek Boogaard, 28, died of what authorities ruled was a toxic mix of alcohol and drugs.
The younger Boogaard was charged Friday with unlawful distribution of a controlled substance, a felony that also applies when narcotics are given away for free. He was also charged with interfering with the scene of a death for allegedly flushing the rest of his brother's drug stash—a mix of oxycodone and related drugs—down the toilet before police arrived, the complaint alleged.
"This is a very tragic situation," Hennepin County Attorney Mike Freeman told reporters. "Most of us know someone who's had problems, troubles with alcohol or drugs. And most of us know that a person, the day they get out of treatment, shouldn't receive for any reason the drugs that put him in treatment in the first place."
A lawyer for Aaron Boogaard said the entire family had suffered a tremendous loss.
"We will address the allegations in court rather than in the media, but note that Aaron was and remains devastated by his brother's death," lawyer John W. Lundquist said in a statement Friday.
Assuming Boogaard has no criminal record, the state's sentencing guidelines would call for 21 months of probation and no prison time, said Chuck Laszewski, a spokesman for the county attorney's office.
Freeman said Derek Boogaard got out of a New York rehab centre just a day before he started using drugs again. He said Aaron Boogaard's statements to police made it clear his brother did not take the pill to relieve pain, "but to prepare for a big night out," and that Derek Boogaard had the narcotics shipped home illegally from New York, without a prescription.
Derek Boogaard, who was one of hockey's most feared enforcers and a fan favourite for the Minnesota Wild before joining the New York Rangers last summer, struggled with pain and addiction, his family acknowledged after his death.
"It's our understanding that Aaron kept his brother's non-prescribed illegal drugs and attempted to parcel them on some kind of limited basis," Freeman said. "... This was not the first time he had been in treatment. He had been in treatment before. And everyone around him should have known that you just simply can't give this kind of drugs to a person who's badly addicted."
Freeman said Aaron Boogaard will not face a more serious manslaughter or homicide charge because authorities can't prove the single pill he told police he gave his brother directly caused his death.
The prosecutor said Derek Boogaard had "a lot" of Percocet, OxyContin and oxycodone in his system when he died, and consumed "a lot" of alcohol that night—too much to fairly charge Aaron Boogaard with more serious offences given that Derek Boogaard may have taken the additional drugs on his own, Freeman said.
The brothers shared an apartment in the Warehouse District of Minneapolis, not far from downtown. Aaron Boogaard found his brother's body when he returned home after picking up another brother at the airport. Their parents, Len and Joanne Boogaard of Regina did not respond to messages from The Associated Press on Thursday or Friday seeking comment. On Thursday, the family issued a statement calling Aaron Boogaard's arrest unfortunate and painful.
Bail for Aaron Boogaard was set at US$10,000 and jail records show he was released from the county jail Friday afternoon into the custody of another unspecified authority. Immigration and Customs Enforcement in Minnesota had placed a detainer on Boogaard after his arrest.
Shawn Neudauer, a spokesman with the federal agency, issued a statement Friday saying Boogaard was transferred to ICE custody and granted release under bond, with a notice to appear before a federal immigration judge at a later date.
Aaron Boogaard was drafted by the Wild in 2004 but never played with them. He has bounced around various lower-level teams and has not appeared in the NHL.
Derek Boogaard, known as "The Boogeyman," was one of the most popular players on the Wild for his rough-and-tumble approach to the game. What the six-foot-seven, 265-pound forward lacked in skill and goal-scoring ability, he more than made up for with his fists. He was one of the most feared fighters during his six-year NHL career, racking up 589 penalty minutes in 277 career games. He left the Wild for a four-year deal with the Rangers last July and scored one goal in 22 games before his season was ended by a concussion five months before his death.
Boogaard's family donated his brain to the Boston University School of Medicine, which planned to examine it as part of a broader study of head trauma in athletes for signs of a degenerative disease often found in athletes who sustain repeated hits to the head.

How stupid do you have to be to do that to anyone, let alone your own brother? And I guess Derek's rehab wasn't going to stick.

But how do you look your parents in the eye after something like that?

The Columbus Blue Jackets have signed forward Vaclav Prospal to a one-year, $1.75 million contract.
The recent injury to Kristian Huselius created a void in the Blue Jackets' lineup, but the addition of the veteran Prospal is a nice response for a team that has made a number of moves this summer designed to make them competitive immediately. If Prospal's recent knee issues don't flare up this season, we expect something in the 55 point range for the playmaker. Source: Columbus Dispatch

The Devils hired Peter DeBoer as head coach.

Yes...it happened last week and not much interested in posting it in this thread......it barely was a news story up here either.
