Fotheringay Essen 1970 CD & LP released

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Today sees the release of a special live performance by Fotheringay that was recorded at Grugahalle in Essen, Germany, on 23rd October 1970. Fotheringay performed as part of a large indoor festival that included many notable bands such as Supertramp, T. Rex, and Kraftwerk to name a few. The concert tapes have been elaborately re-mastered by Fotheringay guitarist Jerry Donahue who got the most out of the vintage recording. This performance was recorded semi-professionally by the festival host, and stands out as one of the best live performances ever captured of this short-lived but amazing band.

The complete concert is released on both CD and LP and features sleeve notes by Sandy Denny expert Philip Ward. More information including the tracklisting is available in our discography here

German Amazon are now selling the CD and LP

Huge Sandy Denny fan, especially the Fairport and Fotheringay era. Very anxious to hear this.
Any reviews would be extremely welcomed.

Sekander - take a look at the discussion here at the Fairport Convention "talkawhile" forum:

To my ears, the release is a partial disappointment, especially re: the performance, which I think is lackluster.

But others see it differently.

Cheers!

Thanks, Robin. Good discussion on sound quality and song selection.

Found the sound clips and the Amazon UK link. The various reviews seem to put the sound quality in between a sound board recording and a boot, though it's good enough for me to take the plunge, ha. I have to say the studio version of "The Sea" just may be my all-time favorite Sandy track, having it in a new live version is fab gear kitten keen.

Some claim this concert is better quality than the Fotheringay live tracks on the 19 CD Sandy box, alas I don't have that to compare. The Fotheringay experts say there's a Plumpton Festival 1970 concert 'in circulation' of even better quality. And there's hope that the BBC will put out an official release of "Fotheringay at the Beeb". I'll drink to that...

Damn, that's expensive! Between this & the megabox, Sandy's descendents are getting wealthy!

I really wish the sound quality was better. There's too much echo to make it an enjoyable experience for me. I also agree with Geff re the price. It would run about $30.00- way too much for me. This was a really good group that might have done some great things had they been able to hold it together.

Further to my above post, I think the tracks on the Sandy box are much better, both in quality and performance.
The BBC stuff is also excellent. I hope that wil receive an official release someday.
