It's being reported on the Hoffman forum that the next Jimi Hendrix CD releases will be "Hendrix in The West"(+ 5 bonus tracks) and a 4-CD box set of 1968 Winterland recordings(My guess is that would be two-thirds of the recordings from the 6 shows). Well, that's better than nothing, but EH blew an opportunity to totally neutralize the bootlegs. And hopefully, EH won't mix out some of the guest players at the shows(like Alan Douglas did).
The guy who posted this on the Hoffman forum says that the news has been reported by Rolling Stone.

Too bad, if true. So many better choices could be made. Remastered 5.1 Atlanta Pop DVD. 5.1 Miami Pop DVD. How about a multi-disc "making of" Are You Experienced? I have all the Winterland I want. Hendrix in the West? Depends on the bonus tracks, I suppose. I'm so weary of lame repackagings. Give us something new. "West Coast" was really great.

The rumor on the internet is that now Janie is spending big money on a lawsuit intended to declare EH to be the owner of the Royal Albert Hall audio recordings, which would render the film footage(without the soundtrack) worthless, and therefore force the film's owner to sell the film to EH.

Heck, I'd even be more excited about a new Dagger Records audience-recorded concert CD.

I've always loved In The West, it was one of the first Hendrix records I owned and I think it was the best of the posthumous releases, but isn't about half of it made up of Berkley and Isle of Wight recordings that EH has already released?

I know that the Red House is from the San Diego Sports Arena - it would be nice if that show were to make up the bonus tracks (wasn't one disc of the Stages box set that San Diego show?)

Humorous, but true story: When I was 16(1972), I bought the "Hendrix in The West" 8-track cartridge at a local record store("Record Shack" in North Miami Beach,Florida), and the middle-aged Cuban lady behind the cash register said(of the new Hendrix album) "He must be sending them back from the other side!". Who would have thought that Jimi would still be "sending them(new albums) back" nearly 40 years later.

Not much more info here, but anyway...

Rolling Stone reports that on September 13, Experience Hendrix will reissue In the West and Live at Winterland for the first time under its aegis. In the West, a posthumously-released 1972 collection of live Hendrix performances, was originally issued by Polydor and Reprise. The album contains songs from Hendrix’s performances at the Royal Albert Hall on February 24, 1969, the San Diego Sports Arena on May 24, 1969, Berkeley Community Theatre on May 30, 1970 and the Isle of Wight Festival on August 30, 1970. The upcoming reissue will reportedly expand the album’s eight tracks (including covers of “Blue Suede Shoes,” “Johnny B. Goode” and “Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band”) with a further five.

Live at Winterland with The Jimi Hendrix Experience was first released in 1987 on the Rykodisc label. Live at Winterland documents The Experience’s performances at the famous San Francisco ballroom (also home of The Band’s The Last Waltz) where they played two shows each night on October 10, 11 and 12, 1968. The big news is that Winterland will be expanded to a 4-CD box set, therefore making an ideal holiday gift.

I agree 100% on why are they only releasing 4 of the 6 Winterland discs??

I would be interested in both anyway, IF they don't fuck up the mastering. But since EH almost always goes for bright, screechy, loud, compressed etc) mastering........................ we may be better off with the bootlegs.

Atlanta is a sub-par performance save for maybe 4 songs. Sub par recording as well. Having the heard some of the multitracks I don't think a 5.1 mix is sensible. The footage is poor quality too. Dark, poor angles, etc. I'm about as fanatical as they come but an official release of Atlanta would make me cringe. Mitch was horrible that day.

Chris: Gee, thanks for the definitive word on Atlanta Pop (which, by the way, I disagee with on just about every point mentioned). 5.1 would be great. Agreed, parts of the film were a bit dark, but so were some of the most memorable parts of the Woodstock film. Poor angles? Not seeing your point. I guess my point, which apparently was missed, is: "Experience Hendrix: Please give us something we don't already have." Like "West Coast." Loved it.

Having just read the Rolling Stone snippet, "Hendrix in the West" will include 5 previously unreleased tracks. That might be worth looking into.

My ? on In The West other than the mastering, is will many of us already have the 5 tracks on a quality boot, or is it really new material?

Why all the complaining? The Ryko Winterland discs have been OOP for years. Seems as though now is a better time than ever to be getting into Hendrix--last month I picked up the "Blues" comp with the bonus DVD at Walmart for less than $10.

I hadn't listened to the unofficial 6 CD's of Winterland material for a long time, but there are indeed some tracks with bad drumming or bad vocals that would show the Hendrix Experience in a bad light. Hendrix changed the song line-up on each show, but "Foxy Lady" & "Purple Haze" were performed in every show(Yes, I know that bootleggers only have the first three songs from the Oct.11th first show, but EH has the whole show). A 4-CD set will have more than enough space to present one best version of each song performed in the six shows, and perhaps a second rendition of some songs(where the performances are acceptable).

Not all the discs in the unofficial version were filled to capacity(I have the three 2-CD sets on the Whoopy Cat label). If Experience Hendrix puts 70 to 75 minutes on each disc, they'll easily be able to give us everything worth hearing, and not tarnish Hendrix's reputation.

Andrew, the Winterland 6 disc version was commonly available for years, both on the net, & also on UK discs that while the UK courts finally ruled them as boots were at the time promoted as legit releases. it's way over priced right now, the link below is only to make a point.

Before I had to sell off my Hendrix stuff (among other things) about 15 years ago, I had the Ryko Winterland boxed set with the bonus disc and the T-shirt. I still wonder if I still don't have that t-shirt packed away somewhere.

Like I said, I've been rebuilding my collection quite a bit--and on the cheap--in the past year or so.

Not sure but the rest of the 10/11/68 1st show might not have been captured on the multitrack machine. I want to say the rest of that set only exists on aud tapes I guess we'll find out.

Just curious, what makes you think a 5.1 Atlanta would be great? If you heard the multi-tracks you might not think so. What parts of Woodstock are dark? They took the stage at 8:00am in the morning! Not trying to be snarky...what do you mean by "not seeing my point" re camera angles?

I find it hard watching Atlanta because he appears so emotionless, no smiles, no contact with the audience whatsoever where at Woodstock he is animated. There is no doubt he was totally committed to the performance at Woodstock, at Atlanta he looks ... indifferent, embarrassed, like he doesn't want to be up there. His guitar tone at Woodstock is blistering where at Atlanta is has no low end, brittle, dry.

Here's "Hey Baby" from Atlanta. Let me know what you think..

I was referring to the Woodstock film in general. Nighttime; "dark" performances by the Who, Crosby, Stills and Nash, Ten Years After, Sly, are all considered to be classic filmed concert performances. Very much the same type of lighting as Atlanta Pop.

No need for the link to the clip. I have Atlanta Pop on VHS. I personally happen to enjoy watching the performance and would like to see it issued on DVD--remastered, cleaned up, with additional footage and documentary. Simple as that. You disagree? Fine. You just came off as the final word and authority on the concert, and I took exception to that. Granted, Atlanta's not his greatest performance, but neither is Isle Of Wight. Not many smiles there either--if that's your thing. Personally, I'm looking for guitar playing--I'm a guitarist. I want to check out the master at work. Check out the "Stone Free" extra on the reissued "Film About." Camera angles? Man, that's too subjective a topic to even try to address.

Anyway, not here to argue my personal preferences, so I respectfully lay down arms. 'Bye.

I rather liked the laid-back "Loose Ends." I listened to "War Heroes" a lot, too. I guess they remain forgotten.

I liked botth also, though pretty much everything from those 2 is on various EH releases.

One of my all time fav JH tracks is the rhythm guitar only from Electric Ladyland that was first on Loose Ends. To this day I find that stunning. As good of a lead player as JH was, he was a better rhythm guitarist; his chords were beyond innovative.
