Product Description
2011 album from the British songstress. On Director's Cut, Kate revisits a selection of tracks from her albums The Sensual World and The Red Shoes, a process that presents a fascinating portrait of an artist in a constant state of evolution. She has re-recorded some elements whilst keeping the best musical performances of each song - making it something of a director's cut but in sound, not vision. All the lead vocals and drums are new performances, some of the tracks featuring guests including Steve Gadd, Danny Thompson and, on backing vocals, Mica Paris. Three songs have been completely re-recorded, one of which is 'This Woman's Work.' Fish People/EMI.

Kate Bush releasing new 'Director's Cut' album in May

Kate Bush has re-recorded some of her old material for release on a new album this May.

The elusive singer is revisiting a selection of songs from her 1989 album 'The Sensual World' and 1993's 'The Red Shoes'. The new record will be named 'Director's Cut' and will come out on May 16.

Rather than completely re-recording the old tracks, Bush's spokesperson said she has reworked elements of the songs with the aim of making the album an audio 'director's cut' of her old material.

A reworked single, 'Deeper Understanding', which originally appeared on 'The Sensual World', will be released in April.

The album will be released digitally, on a CD, on vinyl and in a case-bound book.

Wow, I'm not sure what to make of this. The Sensual World and The Red Shoes are my least favorite Kate Bush albums. If she is going to actually improve the material I guess I'm all for it, but this sounds more like a glorified remix album. Guess I'll have to wait and see.

Being bereft of new songs and bat-poop crazy enough to want to rework 20 year old albums does not bode well .

Amazing to think we are creeping towards being 30 years from the amazingness of "Hounds of Love".

The press release for this also says that she is working on new material. No release date as of yet. But I am really looking forward to this.

I'm...curious. 'Enthusiastic' would be an overstatement. I liked "The Sensual World", "The Red Shoes" less so. Some nice stuff on both, but not in the same class as "Hounds" or "The Kick Inside".

I wonder if she (or her management) got the idea from the attention she received from Maxwell's success with "This Woman's Work" (and the amazing version of it on Idol last year). It's probably taken her this long to get the remixes/remakes up to her insane standards.

I'm with everyone else. As long as she's doing tracks from those two albums, she might as well make it a double album and have it be career spanning. That would be incredible. As it is now, it's kinda "meh." I'll check it out but I'm not too enthusiastic about it.

From today's New York TImes:

Kate Bush Has Permission to Use Words of James Joyce
By JULIE BOSMAN

Molly Bloom’s wandering soliloquy in James Joyce’s “Ulysses” was the inspiration for “The Sensual World,” the title song from Kate Bush’s 1989 album, but at the time the Joyce estate would not give her approval to use the words in her lyrics. Now Ms. Bush has received the long-awaited permission to use the text, and she has rerecorded the song, which she renamed “Flower of the Mountain,” according to BBC News. Ms. Bush said she was “delighted” to have the chance “to fulfill the original concept.” The new track will be released in May on “Director’s Cut,” her first new album in six years.

Kate Bush unveils tracklisting of 'Director's Cut' album
Compilation of re-recorded material will be released on May 16
April 4, 2011 | 7

Kate Bush has revealed the tracklisting for her forthcoming 'Director's Cut' album.

The album, which is released on May 16, is a collection of re-recorded versions of tracks from her 1989 album 'The Sensual World' and 1993's 'The Red Shoes'.

The opening track, 'Flower Of The Mountain', is a new version of 'This Sensual World'. Bush has updated it to include a passage from James Joyce's book Ulysses.

All the vocals and drums on the album have been re-recorded and three tracks, including 'This Woman's Work', have been completely re-recorded.

'Director's Cut will be accompanied by a short film, directed by Bush, which will star Robbie Coltrane and Noel Fielding.

The tracklisting of 'Director's Cut' is:

'Flower Of The Mountain' (originally titled 'This Sensual World')
'The Song Of Solomon'
'Deeper Understanding'
'Lily'
'The Red Shoes'
'This Woman's Work'
'Moments Of Pleasure'
'Never Be Mine'
'Top Of The City'
'And So Is Love'
'Rubberband Girl'

I'll be jumping in for this, but it's not exactly what I'd hoped the next project would be.

Listening to "Deeper Understanding" - maybe it'll grow on me, but at first blush, I really don't like what she did to the chorus. It's lost the beauty it had before - the original got the message across without being overblown.

Agreed. The original was my favorite track on The Sensual World and I really don't like what she's done with it. The whole idea of having a "computer voice" sing the chorus seems kind of obvious and dated. Maybe she's listened to "Karn Evil 9" a few too many times.

It occurred to me the other day that this may be the first Kate Bush album that I've yet to see an actual physical copy of in a store. I don't think this says as much about Kate as it does about the dwindling CD selections at the big box stores.

I've seen both CD and vinyl copies in stores. The vinyl is priced reasonably.

Yes, that is correct: The Red Shoes has been remastered in analog from the original digital recording, while The Sensual World is not remastered at all.
