Damn, but DVD collections of TV shows rock!

We rented a disc of Rockford Files episodes a couple of nights ago, so I've been watching some (while moping around with a cold).

I know I must have seen all these episodes as a kid, but I don't recall them too well. Which makes them great to watch - they are a blast!

New TV generally sucks (with a couple of notable exceptions) but, with stuff like this available for rental/purchase, who cares

Netflixed my way through the first two seasons so far. I just love it -- Garner's performance is so easy and cool. That kind of weary charm and those twisty plots could really lend themselves to a superhero series, I think.

Well, Angel kinda did that already. But I mean with costumes and stuff.

Rockford even makes me want to live in a trailer. Seriously, I'm looking into it.

So I've never really payed The Sleuth Channel much mind. It plays Magnum P.I. re-runs, all of which I've seen a dozen times each, and Simon and Simon, which doesn't hold up very well. Now I do occasionally stop on a re-run of Homicide: Life on the Street, simply because it was a great show.

But the other night, I was unable to sleep, and around 3:30 AM I was flipping through the channels, and there on the Sleuth Channel was an old episode of The Rockford Files. Now that was a great show.

I mean, was there anyone cooler on television than Jim Rockford back then? James Garner was just pure perfection in that role. I ended up staying up for another hour and a half finishing the episode I came in on, and the following one. I haven't seen an episode of this show in 20 or more years, and now I've got my DVR set to record them for me.

During my college years, a local TV station followed their late news with M*A*S*H followed by Rockford. It wasn't uncommon to see cars screetching up to the house as guys left the bars and sped home to hear how Jim's answering machine would start the show.

The Rockford Files is one of my fave shows of all time.

Victoria and I recently went through the first three seasons of it on DVD. Awesome stuff, and it's surprising how well it holds up thirty *shudder* years later

Loved this show! Especially the opening scene with the answering machine and that theme song was spectacular.

Rockfords a slut but he's really cool.

They said in the extras that they regretted coming up with the answering machine idea near the end. Everyone in the office had run out of new messages.

It was funny listening to Garner saying that, the studio wouldn't let them use violence very often, so they had to rely on car chases for action. They hardly even broke the speed limit in those chases!

I love Rockford, and angel and his dad.
THe way he would try to get out of scrapes and not always escape getting hurt.
But he would win in the end, dispite everything.
I think Rockford set a standard for a lot of private eyes like magnum

Mannix might, just might have been cooler than Rockford.

Not to mention Tom Selleck made guest appearances as a young PI on "Rockford Files," IIRC.

My parents watched it every week when I was a kid. I don't remember that much about any of the episodes, but James Garner's character is certainly memorable.

Loved the Lance episodes.

We picked up Season Three quite a while ago. I'll still put it on once in a while. It's only a matter of time before we get 'em all (we got Season Three because it was on sale at this one local used DVD shop we frequent).

This one oddball station here in WANnipeg just started running the show. I'm watching the pilot right now. It's so odd seeing the different Rocky, but it's always great seeing Lindsay Wagner

Those chases were still probably faster than this!

Ian! I just watched the pilot today on Netflix! Like Daphne said above, I dont remember much about the series itself, but the charater stands out. Lindsey Wagner was gorgeous. I'm looking forward to the rest.

It looks like that TV station is actually showing a bunch of old police and PI shows in that time slot - last night, I watched an episode of frikin' Kojak!

Rockford's on the RTN network in the States. (Retro Television Network is a mega-syndication package that filled the void left by the WB-UPN implosion.)

I can't get the GODDAMN theme song out of my head! I seriously woke up at 3:30 this morning because of it! Fuck!

The theme from "The Rockford Files" by Mike Post was a Top 10 hit in 1975.

Post returned to the Top 10 in 1981 with the theme from "Hill Street Blues."

Best PI show there has ever been. Magnum, P.I. runs it a close second. I've got the first 5 seasons of Simon & Simon on DVD, and while I thought it was a great show in the 80's it's more of a hit and miss affair in the long run.
