From the label:

One of the founding members of Jefferson Airplane, Paul Kantner teamed up with fellow Airplane members Grace Slick and David Freiberg to record this 1971 album

The album features Jerry Garcia of The Grateful Dead on guitar and Chris Ethridge of The Byrds on bass

Kantner left Jefferson Starship in the late 1980s, but is now back fronting a reformed Airplane

Digitally remastered and slipcased, and with new notes

If anyone buys this, I would be curious to know if it includes the lyrics and artwork from the original LP.

Etheridge never played with the Byrds-he was a founding member of the Flying Burrito Brothers

if you've never heard this, don't expect the jefferson airplane or you'll be very disappointed.

Yeah, it's not terrible, but it really is for JA/JS collectors.

It's from '73, not '71.

Seconded. I am a HUGE Airplane head, and, curious though it is, I can't listen to this thing.

Actually I really liked the four albums they made during this time period: "Blows Against The Empire", "Sunfighter", "Baron Von Tollbooth..." and "Manhole". After that they recorded "Dragonfly" and it was all downhill from there...

I agree, after Dragonfly they lost me until Kantner reformed the band in the 90's with Diana Mangano, & even than the 1st official live cd sucked. I also like Blows & Sunfighter. Don't remember Baron well enough to comment & my vague memory was not liking Manhole, but it's been years since I last heard it.

Ironically, I bought a 2011 JS release today at Borders going out of biz sale called Air Play with someone named Cathy Richardson on vocals.

Be warned, it's mediocre at best. Very sloppy studio re-recordings & covers. it's the current band with Kantner, Pevar, Aguilar, Freiberg & a couple folks I've never heard of.

I liked 'em from the Airplane days all the way up to Freedom At Point Zero. It and Red Octopus are damn near flawless in my book. The next couple were very spotty and by the time it was Starship it was just tragic. I dug Deep Space/Virgin Sky (later Deeper Space/Extra Virgin Sky) and most of Windows Of Heaven (I think there are 3 different versions of it too). The tunes I don't like on WOH are made up for by the other stellar tunes on it. After that their releases are live albums save Jeffersons Tree (which I didn't really care for) and they run the gammut soundwise (too much Stoli perhaps?) The best of the live bunch is Across The Sea of Suns imo.

Thanks for the tip on Sea. I've also managed to miss that one. Just ordered from 1/2.com (best price I could find).

My senior memory is PATHETIC.

After I ordered it, something told me to look through my business archives to see if I had ever offered Across The Sea for sale. Turns out I had it in 2005, opened one & didn't like it!

Here's hoping I like it more now since I just paid retail for it! :sigh:

I have the the late 90's RCA versions of this, Blows Against The Empire and Sunfighter.

Unless this new one is a big sonic improvement, I'm happy with what I already have.

Aren't we still waiting for a domestic issue of Jefferson Starship's Modern Times?

yep, only out in the U.S. for a very short time years ago.

i think it can be had on an import two-fer now.

i'm also pretty sure that there are a couple of other starship CD's form that era that are OOP in the U.S. (nuclear furniture?)

Need to say this carefully, but Perro is.............. um................... out there to be found.

BTW, I suspect the reason we haven't seen a release is that while enjoyable everything I've heard other than some of the Crosby IICRMN outtakes really does sound like a rehearsal, not even like a finished demo.

i know. i know, but it is out there to be down the right way.

i'm sure it's either 1 - laziness, or 2 - legalities, or 3 - a combination of the two :(
