Fascinating. The one inked by Wood is gorgeous. Very interesting to see how Wood has (I'm guessing) added dark shadows to Kirby's intricate and ornate machinery to give it a very different look to what I'm used to seeing. And the Joe Simon inked one looks to me like it comes from late sixties-early seventies DC Kirby (around about OMAC time) even though it clearly isn't.
Did Kirby do the dialogue for Challengers? It certainly reads like his style, what with those misplaced bold words.

That first Wood sample with the oddly bolded words isn't Challengers, it's Sky Masters. And Kirby did contribute to the scripting of that, I believe.
The Boys Ranch sample isn't Joe Simon inks, it's Mort Meskin, BTW.

So very cool.
How is Royer rated among those Kirby inkers? I know him from all the late Kirby I've purused. Could it be any surprise Joe Sinnott is my favorite Kirby inker? Too bad I don't have an original page handy, but around here...

I wish there was some way to make it financially lucrative enough to re-do the inks on Kirby's Thor. I've been re-reading his run via Masterworks and Colletta's stuff is just uber-painful to look at when you know what Jack's FF looked like.

Vince Colletta gets a lot of criticism for his work, and deservedly so,but there's a couple of other inkers who did even worse by Kirby:Paul Reinman and George Roussos. The frustrating thing about Colletta is that he could do a good job when the mood hit him.Reinman and Roussos were hopeless, deserving the same censure flung at Colletta.

The Boys Ranch sample isn't Joe Simon inks, it's Mort Meskin, BTW. I love the Boys' Ranch comic, and you may be right about Meskin. In fact, there is at least one Boys' Ranch story that looks like it was mostly drawn by Mort Meskin. I do like the combination of Simon and Kirby--but it's always hard for me to know where one of them begins and the other ends. I just know I like it.

Well, I understand that Colletta was the "go to guy" for quick turnaround and meeting tight deadlines. I think he gets the most criticism because he worked on one of Jack's most important runs of his career.

I agree that both of them made his work look pretty bad, especially Roussos. I imagine they don't get so much criticism because they both only inked a relatively small amount of early Marvel work and were gone by 1964 or so, whereas Colletta had the long run on Thor as well as badly inking piles of other artists at both Marvel and DC throughout the silver and bronze ages. Hanzo the Razor wrote: I think he gets the most criticism because he worked on one of Jack's most important runs of his career. Two of the most important runs, the other being the early New Gods stuff. Wood was apparently considered for the job inking the New Gods stuff, but they went with Colletta. That's the piece of Kirby history I wish could be altered.

Any Kirby art inked by Bill Everett? Preferably something from THOR.

To me--the worst was Syd Shores. He overpowered Jack, changed faces and just sucked the life out of pages. Reinman and Roussos had a crude charm. they weren't slick--but you could see Jack in there--Syd altered and destroyed Jack--made faces bland or sleepy looking and just mushed it up. I'll take Colletta, Reinman and Roussos over Shores any day.

It's really evident when you read Cap Essentials vol. 3 when the inks got from Sinnott to Shores mid-story.
