This is from a shy lurker ... Quote: Back in the '80s, during the Secret Wars II event, the Beyonder turned a New York office building into solid gold. Doing so effectively destroyed the building and caused at least one death, that I recall. Spider-Man rescued a number of people from the partially collapsed building. The government stepped in and carved up the building and took the gold to the Pacific Ocean and dumped it there to prevent the thousands of tons of gold from ruining the global economy. Spider-Man, however, witnessing the local police and government secretly give the Kingpin his "cut" of the gold (in the form of several solid gold typewriters from the building) decided that he should get compensated for all the life-saving he did and reached into a solid gold waste paper basket and pulled out a solid gold steno pad that someone had thrown away just before the Beyonder changed everything to gold. This solid gold steno pad was sitting on Peter Parker's mantle for months while he considered what to actually do with it. It would have solved all of his financial problems, but he was worried about explaining where he got it. My question is: What did the PTB in charge of the Spidey titles decide the final fate of the gold steno pad was?

My Spidey comics from that era are at my parents' house down in South Dakota, so I can't look it up to confirm at the moment, but as I recall sometime around Web of Spider-Man #13 or so, he sold it to some shady pawn shop owner for not nearly as much money as it should have been worth.

That's exactly right. Maybe Web #15. The shady dude in question was the Black Fox's fence. Pete repainted his apartment and did a few other good things ---probably paying for May's latest medical bills. I believe he stated it was a tenth of what it was really worth.

I was wondering that myself. It was in an issue of Amazing Spider-Man (the iss where he teamed up with the Puma to kill the Beyonder). I had no idea where Spidey got it from, so its nice to know how he came upon it.

It seems weird to me to sell a gold steno pad. It's gold. Unless you plan on getting some collector value out of the craftsmanship on that thing, just use your Spidey strength to rip it apart, squeeze it into lumps. Plenty of places would buy gold chunks off of you. Less likely to be traced back to some "Golden Building" weirdness that way, too.
