One of Rush's most loved albums is getting a sonic make-over. No, we're not talking about the band's announced plans to remix "Vapor Trails," we have to go back 30 years to the 1981 classic "Moving Pictures" which is getting the 5.1 surround sound remix treatment from producer/engineer Richard Chycki.
Chycki confirmed the news on his website: Ok, so the word is out. I've been in the studio for last month remixing the original Moving Pictures CD in 5.1 surround. I finished tweaks on 'Red Barchetta' yesterday. It really was an amazing experience to spread the original tracks of such a classic CD into the 3D word of surround. (The car speeds off, goes behind and banks a sharp right in rear BTW). The listening experience is drastically enveloping and coupled with songs and performances that epitomize this band, it's definitely a great time to re-discover Rush.
After discussion with the band, the goal here was to pay serious homage to the production of the era so a considerable amount of time was spent researching and working through effects etc. that matched the original but would fare well in the 5.1 world. And of course, placement was also a critical issue. I'm pleased with the results and Alex Lifeson was pretty blown away when he came in to listen to the finals.

MusicTAP:::: Alex Lifeson of Rush has let it be known that a 5.1 mix of Moving Pictures (1981) is being readied as well as a 5.1 remix of Vapor Trails (2002). No release dates set for the time being. In addition, the Rush Universal albums are being slated for a remaster/reissue campaign (no word on which precise titles nor a release date). Their last remaster campaign was The 1997 Rush Remasters.

Remastering again? Don't expect bonus tracks. When once asked about vault material, one of the group members explained that they had very few unreleased tracks; not enough for a CD. And, it is apparent that the group doesn't want their Canada-only non-L.P. debut single ever to appear on CD. One tracks was a Geddy Lee-John Rutsey composition, and the other was a cover version of "Not Fade Away".

There's no need for remasters, as the previous batch sound just fine. Unless they dig up some unreleased tracks, I'll pass. I will, however, get the surround MP and the VT remix.

The only reason for me to buy the new remasters is if they include explanded packaging. I was extremely disappointed by the lack of effort that was put into the packaging of the remasters. No liner notes, no extra photos. The CD booklet for Caress of Steel is a complete joke - you can't even read the lyrics unless you have a magnifying glass.

Easy to read and cheap on the vinyl.

http://musictap.net/ Previously, we had mentioned the remastering (and remix) of Moving Pictures, the 1981 best-selling Rush album classic, which contains “Tom Sawyer”. The schedule now lists it for April 5 with two available packages including a CD/DVD set, and a CD/BD set.
The Rush multi-platinum classic album Moving Pictures is slated for Blu-ray release on April 5 on an audio BD/DVD set. It has been remixed into 5.1 audio by Canadian producer/engineer Richard Chycki, who had sat behind the mixing desk for Rush's Snakes & Arrows. Chycki has stated that his goal was "to pay serious homage to the production of the era."

Thank God I have no interest in 5.1 as a format for music. Otherwise I'd have to buy this (and a million other similar ones).
I"m with ya here. I wish I cared as this is my favorite band (or Thin Lizzy) but 5.1? I don't have any way to play it, and even if I did, I could never sit down and blast it with my wife in the house enough to make it worthwhile. As for Blu-Ray I especially do not care. Obviously, we know people care, but not me. I will read the reviews here and hope that everyone enjoys this masterpiece in a new sonic treatment though. As for remasters-they could certainly dig up some stuff both live and in-progress material, but as far as know Rush have little interest in such things. I have all the remasters from 1974-1996 and they are all very nice. I listen to them all the time. Maybe these will include liner notes and photos and that type of thing, but I'd be very surprised if it involved any rare tracks.

Seeing this tracklisting makes me wonder if the forthcoming remasters will be the same remasters with DVDs of the music videos or perhaps all will get 5.1 treatment? I'd guess the 3 videos are the studio promos and not the live promos MTV used for "Tom Sawyer", "Red Barchetta" (missing here) and "Limelight". MTV never showed the studio promos for "Tom Sawyer" and "Limelight" but did show "Vital Signs" which has never been released before on a comp. This is what to expect from Moving Pictures:
Disc: 1 1. Tom Sawyer 2. Red Barchetta 3. YYZ 4. Limelight 5. The Camera Eye 6. Witch Hunt 7. Vital Signs
Disc: 2 1. Tom Sawyer (Audiophile 5.1 Surround and Stereo) 2. Red Barchetta (Audiophile 5.1 Surround and Stereo) 3. YYZ (Audiophile 5.1 Surround and Stereo) 4. Limelight (Audiophile 5.1 Surround and Stereo) 5. The Camera Eye (Audiophile 5.1 Surround and Stereo) 6. Witch Hunt (Audiophile 5.1 Surround and Stereo) 7. Vital Signs (Audiophile 5.1 Surround and Stereo) 8. Tom Sawyer (Music Video - 5.1 & Stereo) 9. Limelight (Music Video - 5.1 & Stereo) 10. Vital Signs (Music Video - 5.1 & Stereo - Previously Unreleased)
