Sam Raimi considering 'Evil Dead' reboot

Sam Raimi is reportedly considering producing a reboot of his breakthrough 1981 horror film The Evil Dead. The director's business and producing partner Rob Tapert recently spoke to the Detroit Free Press about the idea of a return to the franchise.

Tapert said: "It's possible - we're looking at a script this month."

He added: "What's interesting about The Evil Dead is very few people saw it in the format we made it for, which is for the theatre. I think Sam wants to embrace the ultimate experience in gruelling terror and see it remade for a proper theatrical experience."

The Evil Dead spawned two sequels - 1987's The Evil Dead II and Army of Darkness in 1992. Bruce Campbell starred as lead character Ash in all three films.

Tapert now works as a producer on TV show Spartacus: Gods of the Arena, but co-produced all three Evil Dead movies with Raimi.

Hmmm.
I would have said that Evil Dead II was the reboot.

I like how in My Name is Bruce, Bruce Campbell commented about
chainsaws being too heavy to carry around effectively.

Yeah, that was one of those good moments in that movie.

I was surprised the other day when I watched all three Darkman movies
that Raimi used Bruce Campbell as the Darkman's face there at the end.

Well, it's not too surprising actually. It's just when I first saw Darkman in
the theaters, I had no idea who Bruce Campbell was.

One assumes that Bruce Campbell would be in the Evil Dead IV
movie, but would he be the star, or would they try for some big
name younger guy?

This has been in the rumour mill a while, now. I heard Sean William Scott was slated to be the new star.

New 'Evil Dead' film to be made

A new entry in the Evil Dead canon looks on the cards with original creator, Sam Raimi, set to produce. It's unknown at this stage whether the film will be a sequel or a remake of the original with mixed messages coming through from different players.

But bloodydisgusting.com is reporting that the project already has a director in the shape of Federico Alvarez, to be watched over by Sam Raimi's production company, Ghost House Pictures.

On the subject of whether it will be a remake or a sequel original Ash, Bruce Campbell, under the alias GroovyBruce, tweeted, “Believe in the remake, dawg! The project is real. In the works. Cool as hell. Scary as hell.”

Dread Central also reports that Sam Raimi's longtime editor Bob Murawski informed them that the follow on from Army of Darkness, the second sequel, will be "a small indie thing like the first two."

The first Evil Dead was released in 1981 and garnered a cult following almost immediately, telling the story of five friends trapped in a cabin in the woods who discover a tape that releases evil demons.

The film launched the career of Sam Raimi who later directed the Spider-man films and Drag Me To Hell. Evil Dead also marked Joel Coen's first film work. He was assistant editor.

No release date or title have been announced for the latest Evil Dead picture.

Shiloh Fernandez announced for 'Evil Dead' reboot

Shiloh Fernandez has been announced as the lead in the forthcoming Evil Dead reboot.

Lily Collins, who will be seen in Snow White later this year, was lined up for the top role, but had to withdraw due to scheduling. Although not a straight re-cast, Fernandez will take on the main role in the film, and it's not yet known whether he'll playing the same part of Bruce Campbell in the iconic originals, or reivnventing it completely.

Fernandez previously appeared as Peter in last year's Red Riding Hood.

The story for the reimagined franchise is thought to focus on a group of five youngsters, who take a trip to a secluded cabin when one of their number (the character earmarked for Lily Collins) decides she needs some time out to recover from a drug problem.

The two male roles on offer for Fernandez and David and Eric. The first is a mechanic who’s engaged to one of the girls in the group, while the second is a mechanic and responsible for triggering the Necronomicon’s terrible powers. The latter seems a more likely fit.

Directed by Fede Alvarez from a script co-written by Juno screenwriter Diablo Cody, The Evil Dead will open in US cinemas on April 12, 2013, with a UK date yet to be confirmed.

Yes it will.

Ain't It Cool News has a script review and I don't like the sounds of it at all.

Spoilers galore: http://www.aintitcool.com/node/53298

Also there is this.

Quote:
EXCLUSIVE: Jane Levy is in talks to play the lead in the remake of Evil Dead that Fede Alvarez will direct shortly. She replaces Lily Collins, who exited the film recently. Levy is the star of the ABC series Suburgatory, and stars in Fun Size, the Josh Schwartz-directed film for Paramount.

In FilmDistrict’s remake of Sam Raimi’s The Evil Dead, Levy’s plays Mia, a character that corresponds to Ash, who was played by Bruce Campbell in the original 1981 movie. Mia is one of five young people who head to the remote cabin where evil awaits. Recovering from a recent overdose, Mia is particularly vulnerable.

I thought to myself, "Script? What could be the problem with the script? Evil Dead is not really about a script. It's a simple premise, and the difference is really in the film-making."

Then I read that summary and died a little.

I prefer my Ash male, and awesome. That's all I really ask. Not a chick. Not a recovering addict who is vulnerable.

I have no problem if you're going to make a girl the hero(like in The descent or Alien). Evil Dead is all about what Campbell put into Ash, not him being a recovering drug addict and vulnerable. If anything, Ash was a braggart not vulnerable...

I don't like that they are changing the character's name. "Ash" can be a girl's name. Short for "Ashley."

Am I right, people? Who's with me?
