Got a question; whatever happened to 5 disc DVD changers? I've looking around online and all I found were the large 400 disc changers that Sony has. I believe that 5 disc DVD changers are a great way to watch movies (and listen to music) since you can load a few discs into the unit and forget about reloading for a few hours.

People probably realized that saving 10 seconds to change a dvd wasn't worth the extra cost those units charge.

This reminds me of a friend of mine who held an outdoor party several years back. He came out rolling what I thought was a big black refrigerator on a hand truck - it turned out to be a 500-disc cd changer. He was so proud of it, and I shudder to think of what it cost him. The Ipod was released like 2 weeks later, poor guy!

It won't be too long and kids will be amazed that we had to use shiny pieces of plastic to watch movies or listen to music.

I'm not happy to hear they've stopped making them. The last time I looked, about a year ago, there was still a Sony 5-disc DVD player that also upconverted. It was on my future list. I hope it's not now on my too-late list. I really like having a 5-disc changer. Cartoons on one, TV series in one or two slots, maybe a music video in another and whatever's left for a rental and bonus disc.

I've got one of the 5 Disc upconverting Sony players gathering dust right now. I don't really use it since making the jump to a Blu-ray player.

I do that.

I don't get paid for it, but I do it.
(Though, that's not entirely true. Some days I have projects rendering, and converting and such, where I can't do anything until they're done, so I figure if I am getting paid to just sit and wait...)

I never got the appeal of a multi-disc DVD player although I've had CD changers in the past. I do miss being able to load five or six CDs in a player so I have music while I do other things, but I've never had a need for something that would play one movie after another. I'm curious: on these DVD changers, would they skip the menus and immediately start playing each movie?

I suppose a DVD changer could also double as a CD changer. I guess that's how I'd use it if I had one.

They don't automatically skip the menu. But they do have a memory and will start from where it was last stopped. For example, if one of my discs is a TV series, I just cue up the beginning of the next episode before I stop that disc and it's ready to go for next time. The memory only works for paused programs, not submenus. The appeal for me is to have a variety of things cued up and ready to go — a cartoon before the movie, the bonus disc in another slot, a TV series I'm in the middle of, and maybe a music disc, too, that will start playing where I left it.
