These would be films like Animal House (probably the grand daddy of the modern ones), Meatballs, Police Academy and Down Periscope.
Do you have a favorite?

I don't think Animal House or Duck Soup fit the "screwball comedy" genre, myself.

More like sophmoric comedies. Lots of crude adult oriented humor.
Screwball are the fast talking comedies that are a bit skewed from reality. Oscar Wilde is the grand daddy of those.

Steven is correct. They usually also, in the case of the Hollywood screwball, feature a romantic comedy angle.

I still say Duck Soup applies. Skewed reality? Check. Romantic angle? Check. Fast-paced banter? Check.

The show that bridges the gap: Its Always Sunny In Philidelphia.
Fast paced, witty, off-kilter, and unspeakably tasteless.

Duck Soup loosely fits I guess. I just never think of Marx Brothers in that vein.

I don't know how you would classify Marx Brothers movies otherwise.

Slapstick tends to rely on pratfalls and people hitting each other, which the Marx Brothers tended to eschew. Physical comedy? Absolutely. Slapstick? Not so much. That's more the Three Stooges schtick.

Fair enough. I almost typed "Physical comedy" rather than slapstick, but I wasn't sure that's a genre.

I didn't see anyone laughing, did YOU!?'' (Simpsons quote, bastardised a bit because I can't remember it word-for-word)

Upon further reflection, however, what the Marx Brothers' movies do not have which screwball comedies generally have is the plucky female lead who can hold her own, so I withdraw Duck Soup and instead offer Down With Love as my favorite screwball comedy.

All that said, we can all agree that Animal House is not at all a screwball comedy.
