Film vs. Film Challenge: Round 1, Match 14

The Third Man vs. 12 Angry Men

Carol Reed’s haunting noir is dark, tense and electrifying. Sidney Lumet’s powerful debut is brisk, intense and moving. The Third Man features Joseph Cotton and Orson Welles. 12 Angry Men features one of Henry Fonda’s best performances.

Saw Third Man for the first time a couple of weeks ago. Decent. Would i call it a classic? No. The Wells reveal was interesting and all.

Twelve Angry Men is a classic (even if they closeup too much on "Piglet's" face which is a goofy effect). Great cast, powerful movie.

Twelve Angry Men, for two reasons:
- I've never seen The Third Man.
- I played the lone dissenter in our high school drama production of Twelve Angry Men.

This is one that I dont feel very strongly about. both classics, but neither really a compelling choice for me.

I guess i will go for the ensemble cast.

I quite like The Third Man. It’s very moody and dark, with some great visuals. Plus, it has Joseph Cotton, one of my favorite underrated actors. And Orson Welles! The air of mystery that surrounded him was fantastic, loved the talk on the Ferris Wheel, and the chase in the sewers was excellent. A great noir.

But 12 Angry Men is just the better film. It’s tight, precise, and powerful. Love the ensemble cast, always enjoy Henry Fonda, and think it’s a real treat that Lumet manages to sustain so much interest despite the whole film (save the bookends) taking place in one room.

One bit I really liked: Take note of the really long take when the jurors first enter the room. The camera moves and pans and shifts and slides, but never cuts. These guys open the film with pure performance. No editing tricks necessary.

I don’t get the urge to see The Third Man that often, but 12 Angry Men I can return to again and again. Great stuff. It gets my vote.

Both great films but as I'm a big fan of cinematography I will have to go for the third man - I may also have been unduly influenced by a friend at art school who used to use the Ding ading ading a ding theme music at every opportunity...

The Third Man is a classic because of the Ferris Wheel scene.

12 Angry Men is a classic because of the entire thing, start to finish. It gets my vote.

12 ANGRY MEN proves you don't need beautiful locales and explosive chase scenes to make a compelling film. Gets my vote! Plus, I'm a sucker for a courtroom movies.

I enjoyed both movies, but voted Third Man, pretty much for Orson Welles's excellent performance as Henry Lime..

I saw Third Man once and wasn't impressed by it, despite the fact that I am an Orson Welles fan. 12 Angry Men is a classic movie. Very intense.

I knew 12 Angry Men would win big. I'm just glad Third Man got more votes than just mine!
