Nah, that happened back in 1999, when Entertainment Weekly named Ricky Martin the "Entertainer Of The Year".

The American Music Awards are fan voted. No "artistry" is really required which is kinda weird
considering the name of the award.

Off topic, but did Jon Bon Jovi look like he REALLY didn't want to be there?

I feel like whining, bitching, moaning, etc; but the grammys have rarely been any better.

Almost all of these awards are about bean counters; not about talent or creativity.

It is sad, though to see America's continued fall to least common denominator in the arts.

How is this worse than Vanilla Ice winning awards in the '90s or the Backstreet Boys in the 2000s?

It's about the same. See my previous post.

Phil Collins was cool enough to be in SAY ANYTHING and MIAMI VICE, at least.

One of the greatest drummers in the world compares to the Backstreet Boys and Vanilla Ice how? He's no Britney that's for sure!

Popular artist/act that really didn't deserve accolades in the '80s ... maybe Cyndi Lauper or Lionel Richie?

Cyndi Lauper was brilliant and very talented. You're barking up the wrong tree here, and with Lionel Richie too, IMO, although I'm by no means a fan of him. :)

I don't know, but here's all the Grammy winners of the 80s. My gut tells me Toto, but I know many people will disagree with that, particularly IP.
http://www.80s.com/Entertainment/Music/Grammys/

The cheesiest crap top 40 bands seldom won the Grammy awards in spite of their popularity. Were there AMAs back then? I have no idea.

Dang! Almost everything that won the Grammy in the '80s is classic! Maybe that Dionne Warwick one off, That's What Friends are For, or the worst Bette Midler song ever, Wind Beneath My Wings. Those are pretty bad.

I despise Michael Jackson, but I know 3/4 of the planet disagrees with me!

He compares to the Backstreet Boys and Vanilla Ice because I can't stand his music and his singing. Also, when I was in high school, teenage girls bought his shitty records in droves.
