As owner, George restored the Yankees to former glory, but his tenure wasn't all sweetness and light. His health had been declining for several years, and his sons took over the business of running the team.

RIP George, this is one Yankee fan who says thanks, after all is said and done.

I was going to pick up the latest book written about him once my son's baseball season was done.
I may speed that up a little and grab it this week-end,.

RIP. This is a sad day for all Yankee fans. His teams gave me many thrills and I have no words.

While there's no upside to Steinbrenner's death, it is better for his family that he died this year rather than next year. If he'd died next year, his family would have had to cough up 55% of what they inherent to pay the death tax and may not have been able to keep the Yankees.

I thought that the Yankees were owned by a corporation, and that George's kids were put in charge years ago. I don't think the Yankees would be willed to anyone.

He bought em for around $10M and now are worth about 1.5B. Thats a good investment. An example of you've gotta spend $$$ to make $$$ and boy do the Yankees make $$$.

With all due respect to Steinbrenner, the first report of his death that I read today immediately described him as "iconic". It is just me, or is "iconic" one of those suddenly trendy journalistic adjectives that is rapidly losing all meaning through overuse? We just went through a whole batch of Dennis Hopper obits that made the same claim.

While "iconic" is getting the hot word treatment, I believe in Steinbrenner's case it fits. As Bill Veeck blazed the way for a Steinbrenner, George blazed the way for sports owners like Mark Cuban.

No, see, the baseball team was willed to his spunky alley-cat Rhubarb, and the team walked out until realizing the cat was a good-luck charm, then during the World Series the cat got kidnapped by mobsters, and the secretary was allergic to Rhubarb, and ... wait, where was I ...???

Seriously, my condolences to the Steinbrenner family, and the Yankee family at large. Love him or hate him, George certainly changed the landscape of baseball, and will be missed.

With all due respect to Yankee fans, some of the things I was hearing on ESPN made me want to gag. Greatest sports owner ever? (Even by Yankee standards, previous owners--most notably Col. Ruppert--won more than him.). nobody won more than him? (Does the Lakers' owner Jerry Buss know this?) Please. What is good for the Yankees is not necessarily good for baseball and George Steinbrenner III personified everything that was wrong with sports.

in the NFL, everybody has a fighting chance to get the Vince Lombardi trophy. In baseball when the Yankees sign a free agent for more than the entire payroll---and in some cases, INCOME-----than small cities, it is not good for baseball unless you truly believe it is good that those cities have no realistic shot of EVER winning a championship. the Pittsbugh Pirates were in the first world series, won five world titles and seven pennants since 1903. Thanks to Steinbrenner and his ilk, they may get contracted out of existence in the not too distant future despite great sports fan base and one of the most gorgeous ballparks in the country. That also is his legacy.

Eddie, could you have waited a day or two to spew your hate of George Steinbrenner?

In Tampa he is loved. When I was a PE teacher, his grandson was in my class. Then when I ran a local multiplex, he would come in every week (usually Wednesdays) and he loved how I would hustle, even though I was the manager, and told me.

I should have, but the way ESPN was laying it on thick, I wanted to gag. Colin Cowherd gloating about
how much more revenue the Yankees make than all the other teams and no salary cap in baseball did not
help.

Believe me, I HATE the Yankees and the money imbalance. The Yankees can't play themselves, they need their opponents to be healthy as well.

Another iconic commentary from IMWAN icon, AMW.
