I notice that my PS3 and DVR sometimes lose audio randomly. The PS3 only seems to happen during games (I notice it mostly on Modern Warfare 2 multi-player, because that is what I've been playing for the most part), not during Blu-ray movie playback. On DVR playback, usually rewinding to the point of the drop-out fixes the problem.
My current theory is that it's an HDMI issue, as I'm sure my cables are not particularly fancy. However, I would like some opinions before shelling out for better cables.

No. HDMI cables are all the same, as it's strictly digital, like a VGA cable from the back of your monitor to your PC kind of digital. Unlike composite or some other method where cable quality matters, HDMI is simply ones and zeroes.

However, it is possible for the HDMI plug to snap off on the inside of the TV, which is what happened to mine.

Right, I did consider that, and always assumed exactly what you say—that digital is digital—but wondered if it were possible for a shit cable to cause drop/lose data transfer at higher bandwidths. Definitely not, huh?

Yeah, it's a huge scam. Get the cheapest ones you can find; frys.com or newegg.com are good sources.

When HDMI cables fail, they fail entirely. Loss of signal. The bundle of data that travels through an HDMI is not segregated into audio, etc. ( I don't think).

The sublease I've got right now - I just looked at the cable Internet bill, which the leaser is paying. $65/month at Comcast. SIXTY-FIVE!
She must have got the top tier plan by mistake, which she doesn't really need, being on a netbook with no gaming. Still, I bet U-Verse is available here. Same speeds for half that price.
I would NEVER pay that much for home Internet.

HDMI cables can fail without losing all sound/picture, but It doesn't look like an HDMI problem. However, as pointed above, "better cables", i.e. more expensive cables, are useless at 6ft length. Buy another set of cables from monoprice.com for a dollar.
