Futureheads to return with 'complicated' new album
Plus band set for live dates later this year

The Futureheads have confirmed that they are to return with a new album soon, which guitarist Ross Millard described as more "complicated" than previous efforts.

Millard told BBC 6music that the follow-up to last year's 'This Is Not The World' would be a step away from their "direct", poppier last album. It has been produced by Youth and Field Music's David Brewis.

"We've been putting the finishing touches to the album and it's ready to go right now," he said. "We're really excited about this stuff, we've spent a lot of time making this record, and in fact we've made a lot of it in the North East for the first time. It feels like we've been able to concentrate on things.

"It's forked off into two directions, our last album was very direct. With this record we didn't want to do that again, the songs are a lot more complicated. I've had to go back to practicing the guitar to even play half these riffs."

Millard did not say when the band expect to release the album. He did reveal that a tour before Christmas was likely.

The Futureheads to write musical?
Guitarist Ross Millard reveals their next release 'won't be a traditional album'

The Futureheads have revealed that they could be set to write a musical.

In an interview with Clash, guitarist Ross Millard admitted that their next release "won't be a traditional album".

"We want to focus on things that aren't Futureheads, or maybe not typical Futureheads and release it on the label," he said. "It won't be a traditional album next time. We've talked about doing a musical even."

He added: "Something a little bit more outside of the cycle of recording and releasing album. We want something with more of an arts element, with more of a performance element."

About to embark on a tour of North America, the group released their fourth LP 'The Chaos' in the UK last month, with a US release set for June 1.

Talking about the album, Millard explained how he feels it has a political streak, with the band railing against apathy.

"People talk about the recession as being the worst since the 80s," he claimed. "But if you look at that era there was a whole community of resistance, a conversation between youth groups with regards to politics. There was a voice which was heard there."

Millard added: "In our society now there is a danger of people thinking that politics is beyond them, that the state of the nation is too far gone to bother with."

"It's quite interesting how our record came out right on the election, as that's a good indicator of how involved young people are with this kind of debate. The only way things can change is if your voice gets heard."
