'Daria' Is Finally Coming to DVD, Hurray!

With her patented cynical one-liners and black, round-shaped glasses, Daria Morgendorffer of MTV's cult animated show 'Daria' was the prototypical, overly smart teenage outsider.

On air for a total of five seasons from 1997-2001, 'Daria,' a program that lifted the veil of high school phoniness, provided a niche for all the sarcasm-spewing teens out there.

So we're quite delighted with the news that our favorite irony-loving teenager will soon be coming to DVD. MTV hinted at the cult classic's summer arrival to DVD on the release of their much-loved sketch-show, 'The State,' but now it is confirmed with a brand-new teaser that can be seen below.

Here are our top five reasons why we are totally psyched about 'Daria's DVD release, and why you should be too:

1. For all the moody, teenage outsiders in the world, 'Daria' provided that sharp, incisive worldview sorely missing from other MTV fare at the time, like the numerous, increasingly slight incarnations of 'The Real World'; 'Daria' was truly alternative, in every sense of the word.
2. It was refreshing to see a genuinely astute female character in cartoon form (one other than Lisa Simpson), who most of the time was--in true-to-life fashion--smarter than the adults around her.
3. In its satiric portrayal of boneheaded jocks and cheerleaders, and even Daria's artist-goth besty Jane Lane, the show had an uncanny ability to playfully skewer these stereotypes, reminding you how much you hated these kids in high school. Well, except Jane Lane.
4. The opening theme song: From the raucous guitar-riffing to that iconic "la, la, la" opener, "Daria'"s theme song proved an instant classic, giving the show its recognizable musical stamp.
5. Trent.

Unfortunately, it seems as though at least some of the original music will be replaced due to licensing issues... it's a shame this happens so often with otherwise archival releases.

I liked Daria more than Beavis & Butthead. One episode that played like a Jane Austin novel was totally brilliant.

This goes on the shopping list!

This would be fun. Didn't realize there were enough episodes for 8 dvd's! Hope the price is lower then I think it will be.........

8 DVDs = 5 seasons of the show, 2 feature-length movies, and a disc of additional bonus content

I believe the list price will be $69.99, which will hopefully get knocked down by Amazon to around 50 bucks.

Netflix here I come.......... Hope they carry it!

This was a great series, at least the first few seasons I watched. Will definitely pick this up!

I've been going bonkers with dvd box sets lately. Recent so far unwatched box set acquisitions:

1. UK Woody Allen Box #1
2. UK Complete Marilyn Monroe 17 DVD
3. Herzog & Kinski
4. Other Anchor bay Herzog Box
5. Kino Film Noir #1
and now Daria + around 800 or so more dvd's in my collection i haven't watched yet. Hopefully I'll live a long life & get to watch most of these...........

I just finished New Outer Limits Season 1 box.

Amazon's now raised it back up. I just barely got in under the gun.

Fuck me, I wish I would have seen this earlier in the week. Guess that'll learn me for not getting my daily dose of the WAN...

The liner notes state flat out that "99% of the original music" is not included, due to licensing issues. They try to make light of it, but it is disappointing.

That bites. Though not as much as what they did to Beavis & Butthead.
