Matthew Vaughn Official On "X-Men: First Class"
http://www.comicbookresources.com/?page ... e&id=26093

Zack Snyder. Mark Steven Johnson. Bryan Singer. This list of directors to bring multiple comic properties to screen is a small group, but it's number officially grew by one today as Matthew Vaughn was confirmed as the director for Fox's upcoming prequel for their Marvel Comics-licensed X-Men franchise: "X-Men: First Class."

As Variety reported, the director behind the currently screening "Kick-Ass" (as well as the Neil Gaiman/Charles Vess novel adaptation "Stardust") will helm the prequel pic as produced by original X-Men director Singer and producers Lauren Shuler Donner and Simon Kinberg. The film will open June 3, 2011.

"I've been a fan of Matthew's since 'Layer Cake," Singer told the trade. "He has a deft hand with multiple characters and storylines, and a great love of the X-Men universe. I feel the combination of this story and his vision will make for an exciting and original X-Men film."

Well-read fans may recall that Vaughn was originally lined up to direct what became "X-Men: The Last Stand" – the last entry in the franchise to feature a full team of mutants at Professor Xavier's School For Gifted Youngsters. Though he stepped away from the project late in the game, Vaughn is credited with the casting of Vinnie Jones as the Juggernaut. The director had been rumored to be in for "First Class" – which will focus on the first team of mutants assembled by Xavier and his then friend Erik "Magnus" Lehnsherr – for a number of weeks before reports in the press saw him walk away and then back towards the new film.

With "First Class" in the works, Fox looks primed to extend their control of the X-Men license for the foreseeable future as the studio also has plans for a second "Wolverine" solo picture in the offing as well as competing reports for a "Deadpool" spinoff picture.

I'm really wondering what the cast of characters for this film will be. Cyclops, Jean Grey, and Beast are probably certain (with younger actors). That leaves Angel and Iceman likely needing to be replaced, though, since this isn't a reboot. Maybe Gambit (spun-off from the Wolverine film, and filling that role in the team), and Storm?

That could be cool. Did not like his directing style on Kick-Ass though.

They really need to do a full reboot here so they can use the classic team. Also is gives them a chance to redesign, as the leather costumes are SO last decade.

This is a good, workable idea for a movie. And now that the "coolness" is established, they can go with matching uniforms and it won't worry the Hollywood suits.

Agree!!! Plus they're rebooting Spiderman too so they could pull this off.

I hope they go with the classic X-men and cast some unknowns that are young and look the part.

I was so thrilled when Bryan Singer was going to do this.

But, it still could be cool. I am optimistic.

I was thinking, they could do a version of the Kirby suits with the blue part being black (like the Kitty Pryde version that Byrne did), and the yellow part being a metallic gold. That could look pretty neat.

Something very close to the school uniforms would be cool.

Actually, I've always thought the X-Men were the one superhero team that shouldn't wear anything like superhero costumes. I'd prefer something as close to street clothes as possible. It's just something that I think would visually sell the "people with special powers living in hiding among us" motif.

I couldn't agree with this more. :ohyes:

Though it wouldn't sell merchandise.

Hm. I think I want to try this. Just to give it some structure, I'll do a few different eras of teams.

Original
All-New/All-Different
Smitty run
New Mutants (original)
80s JRjr
Blue and Gold
Excalibur
New X-Men
Astonishing

The trick will be balancing realistic clothing while making them interesting and recognizable.

Goes a bit contrary to what they were trying to do in Whedon's run ("astonish!"). The costumes worked in the early issues anyway. 80s JRJr had plenty of street clothes and I liked it!

Except the Kirby suits were black like Spider-man.

I think they should wear body suits to use the Danger Room (and in training generally). Then, something happens and they have to run out and be heroes in their suits. It gives some iconic shots, but without the story calling for them to always have to wear them.

Plus, a couple of them may have a "powers" need to get into their uni's. Like Cyclops with his headgear, and the Beast needs to be in something like a leotard to do all this gyrations.

The other thing is, you know, protecting their identities. Keeping it hidden for a time, at least.

If they refer to Jean as "Marvel Girl", I'll gladly pay the twelve dollar 3-D admission fee.
