Which creators would you pick to work on their titles?

Sherlock Holmes

Doc Savage: Man of Bronze

Tarzan: Lord of the Apes

John Carter: Warlord of Mars

The Shadow

Plus, whoever else you want. Night Thrasher or whoever.

Do they have to be living creators?

FAIL for including Night Thrasher. I don't want him.

Is this comic books, I suppose?

Sherlock Holmes -- Warren Ellis. And that guy Raulo Cacedres drawing it.

Doc Savage: Man of Bronze -- Brubaker and Epting.

Tarzan: Lord of the Apes -- Millar and Hitch

John Carter: Warlord of Mars -- I don't know. Maybe Warren Ellis again.

The Shadow -- Brubaker and Phillips

To that list I would have to add Conan, the Spider, Avenger, Flash Gordon (or if not him then Buck Rogers, who first appeared in print), the Lone Ranger, and Zoro.

If you're going to broaden it that much, then Night Thrasher has to be included. FAIL for leaving him out.

Oh, Hanzo, what a delightful idea! I must say, while I do appreciate those manly pulp fiction heroes, I'd especially love to see an earnest, heartfelt writer like Kurt Busiek or Brian Vaughn adapt Alan Moore's concept and give us a rollicking League of Extraordinary Youngsters starring a band of teenage adventurers including Pippi Longstocking, Tom Swift, and a more grown-up Harold and his Purple Crayon. (The crayon has gotten a bit stubby by now, but it's still just as magic!) Can't you just imagine the fun they'd have?

The crayon is longer and thicker. Still purple.

I would be happy if a long lost full length novel by Howard was found using Conan.

I want Berni Wrightson on Sherlock Holmes, akin to what he did with Frankenstein.

Barry Windsor Smith on Tarzan.

Loeb and Sale on Doc Savage.

Frank Miller on the Shadow (he could just look in the mirror for inspiration).

Let's keep Loeb and Miller far away from anything we care about. :)

This would actually make me interested in reading a comic book again!

I'd have to agree with Kubert on Tarzan, and I don't think that anyone has topped O'Neill/Kaluta on The Shadow. I was also thinking Alan Davis for Doc Savage, as well. Holmes is interesting...not sure who I would want...it might be interesting to see Wrightson on that, art-wise.

My only problem with the list is trying to figure out how to fit Conan in that world. His existence is so far back it doesn't connect with the rest.

I could see a world in which Flash Gordan is stolen or stows away on a Ming piloted ship, and where John Carter found himself on Mars, while at the same time Tarzan is meeting his first western Europeans and Sherlock Holmes is taking his first case, so that he can finally afford to live in an apartment-- IF he can find a roommate. Clark Savage, Sr., having heard of some wild, feral man in the jungles is convinced that he can raise the man of perfection. A few years later, we see Lamont Cranston returning from the Far East where he has learned to cloud men's minds.

We could add Secret Agent-X and G-8 to the mix for the time period to add some flavor, and I agree, the Avenger belongs in there.

Now... who would I pick as my creators? I really would like Walt Simonson doing at least the art for John Carter, Warlord of Mars.

I want to do this again as if it were happening in the 60s/70s.

Doc Savage - Stan Lee & Jack Kirby

The Shadow - Stan Lee & Steve Ditko

John Carter of Mars - Jim Starlin

Tarzan of the Apes - Denny O'Neill & Neal Adams

Conan the Barbarian - Roy Thomas & Frank Frazetta

Flash Gordon - Stan Lee & John Romita SR

The Phantom - Denny O'Neill & John Buscema

Put Joe Kubert on Flash Gordon instead of JRSR. Romita's style is definitely best suited to Flash Gordon (or the Phantom) of the characters shown, but Kubert would be more epic. Awesome teams. I wish they existed.
