The Chrome Dreams label will be issuing a 2-CD compilation of tracks played on Dylan's radio programme. This is coming out in limited release through Isis Magazine ~ some American retailers will have it, some won't ~ Amazon USA will only be stocking this through their third party dealers, but Amazon UK will be stocking it as a "normal" release so I'll also include their oridering link at the bottom of this post ...

[bigred]The Best Of Bob Dylan's Theme Time Radio Hour[/bigred]
[lilred]October 1, 2007[/lilred]

Image

In May 2006, Bob Dylan's voice floated over the airwaves and into people's homes via the medium of radio. Nothing unusual there of course -- Bob's been on the radio for more than 45 years. But what was different this time was that Dylan was the host of the show, the DJ, the one playing the records by artists other than himself. Over the year that followed, Bob was back every week with a further choice of songs, hand-picked from his own collection and covering virtually every genre ever invented. This 2CD set takes one track from each of the 52 shows that Dylan presented, and in doing so gives a fascinating glimpse into the tastes and passions of a man who himself has become a musical style all of his own." This compilation contains music tracks only and does not feature the voice of Bob Dylan. The CDs are beautifully packaged in a slipcase and are accompanied by a 16-page booklet written by ISIS editor Derek Barker.

Wow...this is terrific. I'm very interested in seeing the track listing. I had thought such a compilation would be a great idea, but feared that licensing for such an eclectic collection of songs from various sources would be a nightmare.

I occasionally hear bits and pieces of his show on XM. He certainly picks a very wide ranging, eclectic bunch of songs to tie in with the themes of the shows.

When I put on the Deep Tracks (classic rock) channel one night, Bing Crosby was coming out of my speakers. I had to listen through to see why on earth Bing Crosby was on it instead of David Crosby. It was Dylan's show. I thought the universe was out of whack or something for a moment... :D

He gave away the baseball themed show with Modern Times (I think). I play that all the time. Although I may lay off the baseball stuff for a couple of weeks.

The UK's Ace label will be releasing their own 2-CD compilation for Dylan's radio programme, with an altered tracklisting and different cover art ...

[bigred]Theme Time Radio Hour With Your Host Bob Dylan[/bigred]
[lilred]February 25, 2008[/lilred]

Image

Ace is proud to present a 2008 double CD paying tribute to [title]Theme Time Radio Hour[/title]hosted by Bob Dylan. For those that are new to the show, each radio program lasts an hour and has a different theme each week, often something simple like 'Drink', or 'Mother'. On the radio program each track is introduced by Dylan with his dry humor, eclectic interest and vast musical knowledge. On this CD set, though, Dylan himself does not appear; just selected tracks that he played on his shows. It's possible to regard this set as the best introduction to music ever.

This is the only officially-authorized release associated with the Theme Time Radio Hour. Its 50 tracks represent the first series of radio shows. The track-listing reflects Dylan's wide taste and ranges from Billie Holiday and George Jones, through Aretha Franklin to the Clash and the White Stripes. Although each track was chosen by Dylan for the radio show, the CD itself was compiled by the show's producer Eddie Gorodetsky and Ace's own Roger Armstrong.

The luxury package contains a 2-CD jewel case with an accompanying 48-page full color book, all in a cardboard slipcase. The sleeve notes include a track-by-track commentary by some of the world's great music writers including Barney Hoskyns, Colin Escott, Billy Vera and Fred Dellar. Each track, no matter how obscure, is illustrated with a sleeve, label shot or photo of the artist.

Other Theme Time Radio Hour compilations have concentrated on the very early material, essentially because that material was in the public domain and thus royalty payments could be avoided. As with all Ace releases, this is a fully legitimate production and royalties are paid on every track.

The Chrome Dreams/Isis Magazine compilation from last year actually did come out, much to my surprise...I found (and picked up) a copy up last week at New York's Virgin Megastore. For a set comprised totally of public domain recordings, it was decently-annotated and well-packaged, and is a reasonably good sampler of Bob's musical ouevre, at least of the very oldest material he plays on the shows. But I'm sure this Ace set will trump it in every regard, knowing the fine folks "across the pond" there!

So let me get this straight ... none of the 3 aforementioned releases feature Bob Dylan in ANY way, right? No talk between tracks, no liner notes by Dylan himself? At least the Starbuck's release has Bob writing something about each track, if I recall.

That's right, no Dylan. These are collections of songs by other artists which he played on his radio show.

Thanks, Linda. I appreciate the info! Still, I hope to see more of his full length shows released on CD, with his commentary. That's what makes listening to them fun! I mean, aside from the great mix of songs.

You say "licensing" as if the label is going to go that route. They may, but as far as I can tell, all of the included records are out of copyright in the UK. Ace, I'm sure, will be more scrupulous.
