I posted on Wolfgang's Vault on the ICE site, but now there is an important update to report...
Check out:
http://concerts.wolfgangsvault.com/home.aspx
Check it out -- there is a ton of archival music here to enjoy!
This is Concert Vault:
There's many full-length concerts from King Biscuit Flower Hour, Bill Graham's Archives, The Fillmore shows, and Silver Eagle Cross Country posted. They're streaming for free.
Just click "concerts," register for free, and you're ready to go.
These are full-length concerts, not the individual random tracks that had been streaming in the past on Wolfgang's Vault.
I'm currently listening to:
The Who Fillmore East 04/06/1968
very cool listening...
Enjoy...
Steve

Concert Vault
World's Greatest Collection Of Vintage Concert Recordings
There's only one place you can hear Bill Graham introduce the Allman Brothers at the Fillmore East, Steve Miller ask for more PA volume at Winterland, or Robert Plant kill time with the Fillmore audience while Jimmy Page re-tunes in the background. It's the same place you can listen to the greatest live music of all time in full, uncut concert format.
It's not Heaven, though it may feel like Heaven to rock music purists. It's the Concert Vault, the world's greatest collection of vintage concert recordings.
Where does it come from? In 2003, Wolfgang's Vault acquired master recordings from the archives of Bill Graham Presents. These live concerts were recorded at legendary venues like the Fillmore East and Winterland between 1965 and the late 1980s.
In early 2006, we augmented the Graham archives by acquiring the archives of the King Biscuit Flower Hour, the nationally famous syndicated rock radio broadcasts of live concerts from the 1970s and '80s.
We also added the Silver Eagle Cross Country archive of country music concerts in 2006, and we haven't stopped there. Keep an ear out for additions to the Concert Vault in the near future.
Share the experience. We took cues from our listeners and have expanded the Vault Radio Feedback page into a fully realized community. In the Concert Vault you can personally rate each concert, see what others think, and meet kindred souls in the Concert Vault Forum.
How do you do it? We've transferred these aging, but well-preserved, tape archives to highest-quality digital formats using the best tools available, and we have carefully catalogued everything.
The Concert Vault is fully licensed by BMI, ASCAP and SESAC, and we pay these performance rights organizations every time you listen to a concert. The license fees make their way back to the performers that made the music. One of our top priorities will always be to make sure that the artists are compensated for their performances.
Yes, downloads are coming! We still have a few details to work out, but plan to begin offering music downloads in the next three to four months. Stay tuned for updates and announcements. Registered Concert Vault listeners will be the first to know.

Wow!. What a staggering list of concerts. This is truly a site that will have something for everyone. There are recordings not just from the big names, but also groups such as The Grass Roots, Pentangle, and Terry Reid. I can't wait till they make this available for download. I'd prefer actual CD's, but I'll take what they give. Thanks for the info update.

Holy S*!T! I hope the downloads to come are lossless & not some crummy variation of itunes or wma.
I've discovered that the sound quality depends on the site's "bandwith detection" which varies considerably at each visit & even at each new concert selected. The sound quality varies from mediocre with a high bandwith detection, to just god awful with more wow & flutter then an old 8 track when the site detects low bandwith. This appears to be a site issue as my bandwith is a pretty steady 1.3 mb.

There's at least 300 concerts listed thus far...
http://concerts.wolfgangsvault.com/conc ... ?stype=all
Also the running times, number of tracks, and even a grade for quality are listed.
These performances are not all from the late 60's/early 70's - they vary into the late 80's. There's so much here to explore.
There's several 1970 CSNY sets for me to get to today, as well as an '86 Art Garfunkel performance at the Royal Albert Hall.
I've even spotted several shows here I attended - wow!
This is going to be fun!
Now, if I can only find the time...

Is it possible to download these at all? Even low-quality tapes of some of these shows on CD would be cool.

I don't believe they can be downloaded, but Creative, Nero, etc can record the stream to your hard drive as a .wav file. You can then split the file into seperate tracks & burn to disc.
Another option is to run a line from your sound card's analog line out jack to the tape recorder of your choice.

I'm still going to push hard for commercial CD releases. Call me old-fashioned if you will, but there is a place in this world for owning something you can hold in your hand that is finished product.

The newest issue of Rolling Stone (with Snoop Dog on the cover) has an article on Wolfgang's Vault. There are musicicians who are supporting it, but there are also people who are discussing taking legal action against them. One of them is Bob Weir over The Grateful Dead material being streamed over there. You'd think by now people would learn to share in the various slices of the pie.

Strange, since the Dead are allowing streaming on http://www.archive.org/details/etree
At one time they were also allowing soundboard downloads, there used to be 100's of Dead shows on the site. The Dead currently only allows downloads of audience tapes & streams of soundboards from archive.org.
BTW if anyone isn't aware of this site, it's the #1 site for LEGAL free live music downloads. While 95% of the bands are unknowns, the following is a partial list of major artists who have agreed to have their shows posted on the site:
(Sorry about the somewhat weird formatting):

I think Weir is not always speaking for the organization. When they took down the soundboards (my guess is as a prelude to the deal with Rhino) Weir made all kinds of statements about his kids' college fund, etc. He seems to have the most ambivalent feelings about the circulation of shows.
The group still allows all kinds of trading of SBDs on their own boards so I am pretty sure Weir is just going off again.

Weir should be more worried that more of his fans will stop smoking pot and realize how much the Dead sucked...

I love differing opinions, but if the best one can come up with is an old lame joke which really serves no purpose but to potentially antagonize others on the board, it holds suspect anything else one wishes to contribute.
Mind you, I really don't mind that you dislike the Dead - very typical of folks who have never really been exposed to them, or have an aversion for complicated, group based improvisation (not every one likes to read either). However, if one is going to rip on a band - and by extension its fans - fellow boardmembers who have not been discurtious to others' tastes - have an argument (ironically, yours reminds me of a pothead's lame "legalize marijiuana" speech 101 assignment: "Cause the only one I'm hurting is myself". Its lazy.). Hell, I love em, and I could come up with a couple of points for a convincing anti-Dead argument (I'd be wrong, of course). Be creative, or at least original.
Peace...

I used to have a knee-jerk reaction to The Dead because they weren't punk rock.
Now that I'm an adult (sometimes a debatable point) I really enjoy a lot of their stuff, especially their improvs. I think discovering stuff like Miles Davis, John Coltrane, and Bill Evans helped me appreciate what I had previously seen as just "noodling".

For myself, it was the Dead that led me the power of Miles, Trane, Monk, etc.
Beyond a lot of fond memories of an admittedly goofy environment and some "enlightening" foolish behavior, the Dead's music attuned me to be receptive to jazz, providing me the most aural rewards in the last 8 or so years – ever since I opted on picking up KOB in a Tower record's discount bin all those years ago. Without the Dead, I don't think I'd be capable of it; I'd have only listened to blues-rock, soul and punk otherwise (and thank God for those too!).

See, it's no fun trying to antagonize Deadheads because they refuse to go all ballistic the way, say for example, Springsteen's fans do.

Fine. Garcia was neither - in fact, he's one of the worst guitar players I've ever had the displeasure of hearing.
