How did she stack up against Shelley "Just sing each line about thirty times and we'll double-track the two best" Fabares?
Same studio formula. In the book
Hollywood H-Fi, the authors describe her voice as "anorexically thin" and comment that "she did endless takes to get enough good pieces to paste together one usable version, and the stress and humiliation often made her break down sobbing." Further, they describe her albums as sounding like "what you'd get if you recorded an ordinary teenage girl of 1965 singing along to the radio in her bedroom."
I highly recommend
Hollywood Hi-Fi to anyone interested in celebrity recordings. A skinny volume by George Gimarc and Pat Reeder, who write with great humor and no small affection for the subject matter. (From a review of a Buddy Ebsen album: "Once upon a time, America was ruled by hillbillies. No, we're not talking about the Carter administration...") Used copies can be had for next to nothing on Amazon.
