I would not miss Blockbuster for the time it took me to type this sentence. BB prices are crazy high.

Yep. :ohyes:

BB CEO announced today they have adequate funding now to continue on. Well, at least they have reduced their older titles to a $1.00 rental. But they have a long way to go. Personally its to late, they ruin the farnchise brand.

Blockbuster Closes 1 in 5 U.S. Stores, Rental Stores Fading Into Twilight

Video juggernaut Blockbuster, long outmaneuvered and outsold competitors. But the industry giant rocked the rental industry last week, when it announced that it would be closing 960 of its 5,000 U.S. stores. Overnight Blockbuster, which also maintains 3,300 international stores, fell from a industry icon to a victim of a changing market in the minds of many. The writing, however, has been on the wall for some time now.

Blockbuster is also changing some stores over to used DVD outlets. In total its filing stated that as many as 1,335 to 1,560, mostly in the U.S. will close or be changed.

Blockbuster did get some good news. Sources indicated Friday that it managed to raise more money that it had hoped for in a private debt offering. The company, with the help of J.P. Morgan Chase, managed to secure $675M USD, when it only had expected $340M USD. With those assets Blockbuster will be able to both pay off its $572M USD in maturing debt and carry out plans to open 2,000 rental kiosks by the end of the year, followed by a planned 7,500 more in 2010.

In the end, Blockbuster is still the market's biggest player, but it faces the danger of falling behind two leading competitors -- Redbox and Netflix -- as the market shifts. Barry McCarthy, CFO of Netflix applauded his competitor's decision saying it was a smart move. He stated, "Blockbuster has been battling a headwind trying to right-size their capital structure. And it looks like they have made some important strides in making that happen. So congratulations for them."

Netflix, meanwhile continues to charge ahead. The company is up to over 11 million subscribers and is forecasting third quarter earnings of $419M USD, up 23 percent from a year before.

Also enjoying new success is Redbox, a vending machine-style rental service that offers 1-day video rentals for $1 (customers pay $1/day for each additional day they rent it). The company now has over 18,000 active kiosks, a 13.8 percent marketshare, and $344M USD in profit for the first two quarters of the year.

Some studios -- Universal, Fox, and Warner Brothers -- are fighting the service, refusing to enter new-release distribution contracts with it for fear that its low prices will undercut their profits. Redbox is suing them, and meanwhile is buying DVDs through retail channels to provide key new releases. The company says this hiccup will do little to stop it, and that it expects sales to double by the end of the year.

Blockbuster's increased online presence can certainly combat Netflix, and its 10,000 kiosks will provide some challenge to Redbox. But as it comes late to both of these games, the question remains whether it will be able to outcompete the younger rivals that currently dominate them. Being king of chain video certainly brings Blockbuster much profit for the time being, but as the industry increasingly shifts towards mail rentals and vending, its ability to compete in these markets will be critical.

Other factors will play a critical impact on the future of the video distribution industry. Executives at Google-owned YouTube are rumored to be in talks with executives from Lions Gate, Sony, Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer and Warner Bros over a distribution scheme that would stream $3.99 DVD-quality rentals over the video sharing service. ITunes and Amazon already offering growing rental schemes. And free video may be the greatest threat of all, with sites like Hulu using advertising revenue to pay for a plethora of streamed TV shows and select movies.

The Blockbuster shaking up is only the latest in this fast evolving market. Rental video stores are slowly riding into the sunset, but clinging to part of the market. They still lead the market and won't disappear overnight, but streamed rentals, kiosks, mail rentals, and free advertising-driven content seem poised to eventually eclipse the tried-and-true format.

A good friend of my son, has a mother that works at the local Blockbuster.
Last week she told him not to bother returning the videogame he rented.
Now I am wondering if it is one of the closures.

If you give your e-mail address, you'll receive a borrow and return receipt via e-mail. I once had a problem with returning a disc, but the customer service person helped me through that. I've been using it for a couple fo eyars now and it's easy as anything.

I haven't rented from Blockbuster in years-- the fact that you can buy a DVD for $5 makes renting one for that price seem crazy. Ironically, I mosrtly use Blockbuster to buy newer movies used. A lot of times they'll have a 3 for $20 on new releases and that is a great price for some newer films that are still selling for $20 retail.

I'd hate to see them go, I've been buying movies there for years.

Blockbuster's just too expensive in today's market. I can't justify renting something for $5 when i can get it for $1. Blockbuster really needs to do something innovative.

All the Blockbusters closed in this area last year. That was 3 of them. There is only 1 left north of me about 4 miles away.

Yes, BlockBuster should have been more proactive, should have foreseen the move to digital movies and online transactions, should have foreseen that vending machines were a more economical means of distributing product.

The CEO of Blockbuster made $8.41 million in 2008 and $5.62 million the year before. The guy he succeeded made more than $16 million in 2006. These executives don't care whether the business fails or not. One year's salary has them set for life.

I have given them my email address several times. I receive the new release email every week, but have yet to receive any sort of receipt. I suppose I should email them and ask why. Thanks for letting me know how it's supposed to work, Hanzo!

I always wondered about how Blockbuster felt about the storyline on "The Sopranos" when A.J. had dropped out of school and was working as a Blockbuster clerk...

Worked at one during desperate times about five years ago. Haven't shopped at one since. I hate scratched discs and new DVDs are dirt cheap, so why?

A question for people that have used a kiosk.
I assume they require a valid credit card, and if you don't return it, they bill your card for MSRP.
Right or wrong?

I'll miss blockbuster. If you've got a teen with nothing to do all Summer, Blockbuster beats out Netflix. My kid would get a Summer game pass and an unlimited movie pass and watch every movie in the place.

We use Netflix as well, but we'll rent four or five movies some weekends.

I recently gave their mail order service a try. The speed of service and price is certainly on par with Netflix.

But it's their web site that lets them down. Blockbuster has basically made its name by pushing recent releases and that's pretty much all they do on-line. Netflix takes a few minutes to ask you about your preferences, then selects several different feeds on your home page. In the mood for a comedy, scroll through the comedies; want a documentary, scroll through that one. Every time I go to Netflix's site, I add a title or two to my queue. I almost never added anything to Blockbuster that I didn't specifically search for. They also don't lead you into their service like Netflix does, who prompts you to add several titles to your queue the first time you log in. They basically assume you're only interested in the latest big releases starring big name stars.

Another thing that annoys is their IE-only streaming video. Okay, sure you can use Firefox with the IE extension, but you've got a choice between two resource heavy browsers... which severely limits my ability to multi-task while watching a movie on my two monitor set-up. Netflix lets me watch movies with the resource-lite Google Chrome and that's a definite plus.

Netflix's streaming video was also IE-only until very recently.

They charge you a dollar per night. I don't know what the cap is if you never return it.

I'm seeing those $1 RedBoxes everywhere now.

I love RedBox. It's rental without the bloody hassle of getting a membership card, them being out of your movie, etc. And yeah, after you hit $20 or so, they quit charging you and assume you bought the movie.

I think the cap is $25 and you then own it.

Just wish the selection was better and they dumped the direct-to-video crap.
