A friend of mine had a huge huge crush on Caitlin Clarke because of that movie, and went to great lengths to get theatre cards and pictures wherever he could. Not that easy back in the early 1980's

Yes!
That movie was unjustly maligned when it was in the theaters. I just watched it a couple of weeks ago and it just gets better and better for me with each successive viewing.

At first I thought this was going to be about a new Robert Ludlum thriller....
I've seen the movie. The dragon is remarkable. I remember it came out at the same time as Ray Harryhausen's last movie "Clash of the Titans," and the reviewers were all talking about how much better the special effects were than his traditional stop-motion animation.

It was because they had computer-controlled armatures moving the models when the frame was being shot so that the model's movements were given motion blur, a technique they perfected with this movie but started early experiments with in Empire Strikes Back. I thought it was brilliant. That scene where Vermithrax crawls out of the mist in her cave after discovering her babies are dead is absolutely stunning to this day.

I've read that "go motion" techniques like this accounted for about half the dinosaur footage in "Jurassic Park" as well. People tended to assume that it was all CGI.

No go motion in JP. It's not all CGI, but they used life size robotics for the other parts. Go motion is a specific miniature technique not entirely dissimilar to Harryhausen's classic stop motion work.

Hmmm. Never bothered checking this flick out because I thought it would be cheesy. Perhaps I need to rethink that.

Never heard of this film. Maybe I'll have to check it out.

I saw it early in first release. My Dad and I went to see this and For Your Eyes Only, back to back in a single night. I was pleasantly surprised by the movie.
