New York, NY (July 23, 2009) — Scholastic, the global children’s publishing, education and media company, is delighted to announce the acquisition of US, Canada, Philippines, and English Language rights to new titles by Jeff Smith featuring characters from his bestselling BONE series of graphic novels. First to be published will be BONE: Tall Tales, coming in Summer 2010, written by Jeff Smith and Tom Sniegoski, and illustrated by Jeff Smith, featuring new art and stories with favorite BONE characters. In addition, Scholastic will publish a highly-anticipated expansion of the BONE world—the Quest for the Spark Trilogy. Overseen by Smith, the trilogy will be written by Tom Sniegoski and illustrated by Jeff Smith. BONE Quest for the Spark: Book One (Fall 2010), BONE Quest for the Spark: Book Two (Spring 2011), and BONE Quest for the Spark: Book Three (Summer 2011) represent the first time Smith has continued the adventures set in the valley since the publication of Rose, the prequel to the BONE series—to be released by Scholastic/Graphix in August 2009.

Given how successful the books have been for Scholastic (and Smith) it makes a ton of sense.

Anybody reading RASL? Mostly incomprehensible, but I still kinda like it.

I like it quite a bit. It reads better in chunks, and it takes getting used to the idea that it's NOT Bone (and that wasn't easy for me), but five issues in and it's a nifty little sci-fi/noir book. I described it in another thread as Smith channeling Philip K. Dick and David Lynch. Probably a bit of David Cronenberg, too.

Monkeyface guy is definitely Lynchian. The misery to be found in the alternate realities also reminds me of the second half of Mullholland Drive.

I'm not a fan of super hero type comics. I like the funny comics like Bone. Very funny stuff.

Some of the identity stuff reminds me of both Lynch and Dick. The idea that when he drifts to another dimension he erases his alternate self from that dimension. I think as much as Bone was Smith doing his own sort of Tolkien thing, this is him doing his PKD thing.*

*Thinking about it, it reminds me a lot of A Scanner Darkly in some way.

Nice to see that Rose is slated for release next month, too.

Captain Marvel did well enough to get a high-quality trade and he's still doing RASL, as well. I think it has less to do with how those books did or are doing and a lot more to do with how Bone has been doing.

Maybe after a few years' break from "Bone" he feels ready to get back to that creation.

I think Ted the Bug and his big brother are my favorite characters in the Bone-verse.

Read some of my Bone comics today, thanks to this thread. Still hilarious!

The trouble being, of course, that BONE is so good anything else Jeff Smith does pales in comparison.

Smith's Shazam (and the follow up series started by Mike Kunkle and now being written by Art Balthazar - Billy Batson and the Magic of Shazam) are currently the definitive versions of the Marvel Family, what's going on in the DCU proper with Billy, Mary and Freddy is pretty pathetic in comparison.

So part of the Marvel family's continuity is in big foot cartoon style and the other is ultra serious style?

I think Smith's series and the Kunkle follow-up are both out-of-continuity.

When Smith was writing it he was promised it would be in continuity. I think DC is going to make it the continuity for whichever Earth is the replacement for the old Earth-S, I forget the number. But I really don't care because I thoroughly enjoy the series in or out of continuity. It's all ages fun that I can share with my 7 year old niece. Anything that excites both kids and grownups is a rare win in my book.
