I hear good things about Age of Bronze....

Judge Dredd Complete Case Files. They are a bit hard to get. I had to get 1 and 2 from England. I didn't care for the US produced series.

Oh yeah, I forgot - creator-owned is what I'm after. No interest in a new writer every 5 issues.

Fables

I've just devoured the first 5 Fables trades in just a couple of days. My library hasn't gotten the next few yet. Y has been great since the start, but it ends in less than a year. Lots of trades out though.

Yeah, Fables is great. I tried the first trade of Y, but didn't get into it much. Probably too many science fiction stories and bad B-movies in my life

As well you should. Excellent book. You can see some sample pages here.

Keep in mind, though, it comes out s l o w l y. The series is partway through volume three of a projected seven, and I think it first started coming out, what, five years ago? You may never get to read the end of it. If you want something ongoing, this might not fit the bill.

If you like urban crime drama, I can't recommend 100 Bullets enough. While the first trade is a mixed bag and the heavy, overbearing slang is a bit difficult to penetrate at first, the second volume reveals a nice conspiracy tying all these tales of revenge and vengeance together. It gets better and better from there. Truly excellent work. (But if you hate liberal profanity and urban crime, you'll hate it.)

Right now, Y: The Last Man is racing towards its conclusion, and I'm still loving the ride. You've probably already heard buzz on this series. The hook is simple: Every male in the world suddenly dies except one man and his monkey. What follows is The Stand crossed with ... I dunno, a bunch of other stuff. This is a GREAT read. Lots of fun. I also like that it's finite. It will end. You'll get closure. (Some time in early 2008, I think)

For a one-shot. Blankets is a poetic, touching, sometimes moving, sometimes difficult autobiographical account of a young man's first love and chilhood memories. This is one of those works that really utilize the medium well. Craig Thompson is genius. It's also a THICK book. The bang for your buck is excellent.

Everyone and their goddamn mother is now reading The Walking Dead. You should be, too. You don't need to like zombies to like this ever-expanding soap opera of survival. I don't like zombies, and I LOVE this book. First five trades run about $10 each at Amazon. That'll get you caught up. If you don't like the first one or two, this isn't for you ... but pretty much everyone who tries this is hooked.

If you don't reading something already long done - I get the sense you want an ongoing - I firmly believe every lover of the medium should read Cerebus, through Church & State at the very least.

Well, you'll have to hunt it up, but there was a great limited series called Fade From Blue ....

I still like Strangers in Paradise. It has its flaws, but my love for Francine keeps me coming back every six weeks.

There's only like 6 issues left of what will be something like 108, but they've got full-sized TPBs, as well as digest-sized ones.

I love 100 Bullets. I loved Cerebus, too, although I kinda lost interest in it around the end of Guys.

I've heard a lot of good stuff about Blankets and Walking Dead, too. I'll pick up some trades. Same with Age of Bronze.

I'd also like to say that although Image Comics originated as a company full of product I loathed, they sure have some nice-looking stuff now.

Yeah, I've read a lot of the early Stangers In Paradise. That's a damned good comic.

If you liked 100 Bullets, consider checking out Stray Bullets. It's a noir crime comic by David Lapham, collected in some hardcovers and/or a series of eight softcovers. It has a big cast of characters, and seems to rotate through several ongoing stories which sometimes interconnect and sometimes don't, and is told through a series of connected yet standalone stories. It's a "crime" comic, but it's more about people than the crimes they are involved in. I heartily suggest this one.

(His Murder Me Dead graphic novel is also fantastic; reminds me of a 1940s noir film.)

Also on the crime tip, Bendis' Jinx, Torso and Goldfish are all great freakin' reads. I really wish that guy would go back to this sort of work. If I had to pick just one, I'd go with Torso. It's semi-historical fiction. It'd make a killer movie, no pun intended.

If you liked the adventure aspects of Bone, you can't go wrong with Elfquest. The first major arc - it was collected in four trades; not sure how it's out there now - is truly epic. Lots of exciting adventure, a creative world, and all around compelling stuff. One of the 1980s first major indies, and still great. I can't believe how well this holds up.

Also, Paul Chadwick's Concrete. I don't consider it a "superhero" book by any stretch. It's just wonderful; human; introspective. Love it.

I recommend that you start with "The Complete Concrete" TPB.

The Losers by Andy Diggle and Jock - action/espionage as an elite team of soliders is betrayed by corrupt elements in the CIA goes rogue and decides to fight back. Lots of action and lots of fun. 5 trades tell the complete story.

Warren Ellis' GLOBAL FREQUENCY - 2 trades that tell the story of a group of specialists that are all linked to the Global Frequency (soldiers, hackers, forensic scientists, etc) all brought together to take down various 21st century threats.: Terrorist organizations, science gone mad, supernatural phenom, etc

FELL by Warren Ellis and Ben Templesmith. 1.99 an issue for 16 pages of story and 2 or 3 interesting text pages and it's one of the best comics out there.

Pick up BOX OFFICE POISON and later, its quasi-sequel TRICKED, by Alex Robinson. Both are two big books. You will not be disappointed. BOP is one of the best stories I have ever read, in any medium.

I love Elfquest. I got on board with issue #3 of the Epic re-release. Probably my favorite comic book as a teen.
