It's almost out, with a release date listed for July 7. I'm going to order mine soon.

This project has me very excited. I love it when a comic medium is used to do something "literary" or "serious."

Anyone else going to read it?

Quote:
Starred Review. For decades, Mazzucchelli has been a master without a masterpiece. Now he has one. His long-awaited graphic novel is a huge, knotty marvel, the comics equivalent of a Pynchon or Gaddis novel, and radically different from anything he's done before. Asterios Polyp, its arrogant, prickly protagonist, is an award-winning architect who's never built an actual building, and a pedant in the midst of a spiritual crisis. After the structure of his own life falls apart, he runs away to try to rebuild it into something new. There are fascinating digressions on aesthetic philosophy, as well as some very broad satire, but the core of the book is Mazzucchelli's odyssey of style—every major character in the book is associated with a specific drawing style and visual motifs, and the design, color scheme and formal techniques of every page change to reinforce whatever's happening in the story. Although Mazzucchelli stacks the deck—few characters besides Polyp and his inamorata, the impossibly good-hearted sculptor Hana, are more than caricatures—the book's bravado and mastery make it riveting even when it's frustrating, and provide a powerful example of how comics use visual information to illustrate complex, interconnected topics. Easily one of the best books of 2009 already. (June)

Mazzuchelli's Batman is my all-time favorite design. I'll give this a shot.

Seems like we've been waiting for this one for quite awhile. 'City Of Glass' was the last book Sisko recommended to me, way back when. I figured I'd order it along with 'Asterios Polyp' when it finally came out. Looks like the time draws near for some Mazz goodness.

Looks artistically interesting, but I've usually found "literary" comics disappointing, to the point where I'm leery of them now.

"Asterios Polyp" sounds like a form of malign growth that a doctor would need to remove.

I received my copy yesterday evening, and devoured it last night and today. What a good work -- there's enough visual effects to compare panels forever. I thought it was really well done, combining some obvious philosophical musings of Mazz with a very poignant story. I was very much reminded at times of Eisner's Dropsie Avenue stories. At times, it seemed like a Peter Bagge work.

I think this will probably clean up in all the artsy fartsy awards this year.

The book itself, the colors the binding, the paper -- gorgeous. A handsome addition to any collection.

Mazz uses everything to convey story and ideas -- colors, fonts, page layout, line style, human figure drawing.

D.L., this would make an excellent addition to the library. But beware it has boobies in it (little artsy ones), so it would have to be located and cataloged accordingly.

Like Peter Bagge? Really? He seems pretty far afield from Mazzuchelli.

None of visually resembled Peter Bagge. Just that at times the story telling reminded me of a Bradley story. Polyp meets characters and they go on with their odd ways.

Bagge has no first-person, author musings -- he just has characters talk about the mundane or what's important to them.

Eisner has all these god-like observations outside the dialog. Outside of a panel ,even.

Asterios Polyp combines both of these feelings, and more.

This one from the Savage Critics is more in depth and descriptive.

This is praise that speaks to me. I am now looking forward to checking this out even more so than before. My next TPK order is coming up in August, so it will be fairly soon.

The part about being reminiscent of Will Eisner's work sounds good. But we just don't have any readership around here for that kind of work. I couldn't justify it as a library purchase.

I am a huge fan of Mazzuchelli's and yet this is the first I've heard of this. I am curious indeed.

OK finally got around to reading my copy and I was a bit underwhelmed. The art is great and saves it for me, but the story was only OK I thought. The title character while not an entirely bad person was not very interesting to me, I didn't really like him much. And what the hell was up with that ending? The last few pages were a big turnoff and felt like what a kid would do when he didn't know how to finish the tale he was telling.
