I'll put it in spoiler text. The question is "is this not a huge plot hole? The opening hook of the book is the airliner sitting on the taxiway, dead in all senses of the word. No power, nothing. The people are found in a state that shows no struggle, no fight, no gore. They are all sitting there as if a wave of death just swept over them. Really eerie.
As the book goes on, they never circle back and explain that. All of those passengers were "infected" and became vampires. The vampire kills with great power, but basically he would need to have, one at a time, use his proboscis tongue thing to slice into their throats. (the autopsy confirms they have the little throat slit). What happened? I see no basis in the book for that to have happened. Every other infection or attack was more like the speedy zombies in 28 Days.

It may be that elders have the ability to do something more than mere converts, so that he put everyone in a trance until he could infect them. Otherwise, I'd agree with you that the mode of infection didn't appear to match with what we saw otherwise.

That's the best I could do -- but it's odd to set up a classic "locked room" type scenario and then not circle back. Usually a mysterious situation like ends up being the key to the final exposition by the main character.

Based on how the rest of the book came across, I'm going with the "Came up with a cool opening, but didn't think any further than that, so they just ignored it for the rest of the book" theory.

That's my theory, too, I guess. He had a clear mental impression of how creepy it would be to have that plane just sitting there, dead as a doornail. And he built the book around that.

I read all 3. I thought it was all right. I thought there was a pretty neat twist. The books go to great lengths to provide a scientific explanation for the Vampires....but the origin still turns out to be part of the Supernatural

So, since no one reads books anymore, did anyone else watch the first episode last night? Personally, I found it interesting aesthetically, with some decent actors, but I'm a little concerned about the plot, and how much of the plot was geared around the stupidity of human beings. notably (spoiled since it was only last night) 1. how fast they took the bodys that went for autopsy out of quarantine, when there was an unknown cause of death.
2. just how dependent they were on the driver being released by Sean Astin's character; that's some pretty powerful precognition from the town vamps, that he would be right there, without a nosy cop on a bad night, to get the coffin out of the airport.
3. by showing that the carrying agent (the little worm thingies) move from host to victim and continue to infect them, and suriving without a host, the show is faced with the zombie growth curve (every victim becomes a new carrier looking to infect others), thereby making it unlikely that anyone in the human race is going to survive in a more realistic scenario. I know they've run 3 books, so its not going to be the pure cataclysm that it probably should be, but if they don't address some of the key gaps in the premise, or logic of the show required to keep the plot moving forward, I probably won't keep up with it.
