Amazon has both Biograph and The Bootleg Series 1-3 box sets on sale for $27.00. I had Biograph on lp's when it originally came out but traded it in years ago and never got it on cd. I never had Bootleg 1-3 . I plan on getting one of them before this sale is over . Which one do I go for ? How do they compare side to side ? Thanks , Don

It depends on how into Dylan you are. Dylan for beginners? The three "Greatest Hits" volumes or the "Dylan" 3-disc set. For the intermediate Dylan fan, "Biograph" has plenty of tracks unavailable elsewhere, as well as many album tracks from 1962 thru the early 80's that have not popped up on the other best-of comps. "The Bootleg Series Vols. 1-3" box would be for the more advanced Dylan listener--top-heavy with album outtakes, especially from the 1960's, but still loaded with many wonderful songs.

I have always like Dylan but never really bought alot of his cd's . I have a few Dylan cd's , the 3cd greatest hits (red cover titled dylan) , 3 or 4 remastered studio albums and an old copy of At Budokan on cd. Thats about it .

Well...sounds like "Biograph" might be somewhat more up your alley. While there is some overlap with the "Dylan" set, I've always thought it is one of the best boxed sets ever compiled, although it is no longer what you might call "career-spanning". They're both incredible sets, however.

Unless you're a big Dylan fan and have a lot of his stuff already (sounds like you're not), I'd second the Biograph recommendation. If you like that a lot, then go for the Bootleg 1-3.

Certainly can't disagree with the initial recommendation of Biograph, but would only caution that it should not be misread that bootleg 1-3 is just for the diehards. It is a complete work, and is also often cited as one of the better box sets period. I feel either would be a strong choice (or even better, get both!)
