....Keith Giffen and Matthew Clark.

http://www.newsarama.com/comics/090226- ... atrol.html

Some interesting ideas and statements by Giffen in this interview. The series is being targeted for a late 2009 launch and will initially focus on the original four members, centering on the idea of them seeing themselves as freaks and outcasts.

NRAMA: What can you tell us about what you're bring to the Doom Patrol that makes it worth bringing back this time around?

KG: I can't say too much. I don't want to spoil it. But I went back and looked at the entire history of the Doom Patrol and cherry picked the things I wanted to emphasize this time around. I'm determined to keep as much of the Doom Patrol's past intact as possible, but the book is not about their past. It's about their future. So past adventures might be referred to, but never in a way that you feel that you've got to go back and buy a back issue. I want the book to be widely accessible.

The book will also contain backup stories starring the Metal Men, which will reunite Giffen with his JLI co-creators, JM DeMatteis and Kevin Maguire. (I predict some seriously loony Metal Men stories.)

Old news, but this latest article kinda piques my interest. Plus the art looks to be good.

I may pick this up for the Metal Men backup by Giffen/DeMatteis & Maguire. The concept sketches for DP look good.

By today's standards, it's an unusual marketing strategy. The dysfunctional, somewhat grim Doom Patrol in the main story, followed by a Metal Men story in the humorous vein of JLI. They're obviously trying to appeal to fans of either team and hoping that the combination will provide enough sales to support the book. It will be interesting to see what kind of sales the book gets.

I hope Nudge & Grunt die in the first panel.

I hope it works, I wouldn't mind seeing this format with other characters that have a hard time sustaining a solo series. Atom/Hawkman, Aquaman/Spectre and so forth.

I think it's a good pairing, too. I have no idea about the sales, but it gets both teams back out in front of the public. You never know where that might lead.

I'll be getting this for the art, hopefully I will like the writing - Giffen is hit or miss with me. His recent attempt at reviving Suicide Squad with the faux Sgt. Rock was pretty unappealing stuff. Never really though Ambush Bug was that hilarious either. But then he has done stuff like Justice League, so I know he has the chops.

It is my personal opinion that when JB kills off a book it should stay killed. Doom Patrol, Demon, Atom (only did half the job), JL Confidential.

If it doesnt work in JB's hands, it cannot work, and thus should not be tried.

This series has been a very pleasant surprise for me so far, as has been the Metal Men backup feature.

I've been on the fence, but the latest issue (Blackest Night Tie-In) has been the best so far. I hope Justiniano stays on as artist, his style really suits the characters. Giffen tends to write somewhat unlikeable characters too, I hope he lightens up a bit with the acerbic personalities. Metal Men back up has been a bvit talky, but the art is gorgeous.

I've only picked up the Blackest Night tie in, but I may end up picking up the trade when it comes out. The Metal Men back up looked like fun.
